I also had a hen that ate a lot of straw. I used a stool softener a couple of days in a row but I had the most success with digestive enzymes and crop massage. I used a mixed digestive enzyme that has cellulase. The crop massage was more aggressive to break up the straw ball. The ball got harder before it got smaller. At that point I gently, through her crop pulled it apart. Not too aggressively on that. Maybe 2 pulls 2 or 3 times a day.
***You should be able to feel the straw fibers. At least I could tell it was stringy and fibrous*** I'm adding that JIC it's not straw.

I also limited dry and hard foods.

Eventually bits of straw were coming out the other end. It's good that she is pooping. That means that right now she's not totally stopped up.

My hen's crop was huge and it took almost a month to totally clear it. She had a saggy crop for the rest of her life so I had to keep an eye on it.
What kind and where did you get digestive enzymes? How do you give it? Mixed in water, or? I haven't heard of these. I'd like to get some asap to try.

She's barely pooping. Definitely not the poop machine she usually is.

And she only wants to lay down. All day. The crop is the size of the palm of my hand.

I did the same thing you described to her crop yesterday. I got a bit aggressive with the massaging (but not painful) to pull apart any straw fibers. I could feel them. I also feel a little bit of scratch at the bottom of her crop. Her crop didn't feel hard as a rock as people described here though? It was doughy, but I could feel the straw in there too. The whole crop would keep form if I smooshed it, like playdough, if that makes sense.

Today I don't feel much of the straw in there anymore. only a little bit here and there. It feels like a water balloon with a little bit of that scratch that was at the bottom still.

Thanks for the help

It sounds like she is adjusting her crop, and they tend to do it more if something is stuck in the crop. If her crop is impacted, antibiotics would not help. If sour crop develops, that can be fungal or bacterial. Does she get grit free choice? I would try to get her drinking fluids and offer some egg. In addition to coconut oil, you can offer a Colase stool softener to swallow to try and break up an impaction. I would keep up the crop massage.
Shes not eating the egg, which is saying something because she usually scarfs egg down. She has only eaten a few bites of watermelon and some chopped up cucumber. Yes she gets grit free choice.

I may try the colace. But does colace only work if the impaction is in the crop? Or will it work if the impaction has moved to the gizzard?

@Yellow321

You should be able to find digestive enzymes in the vitamin aisle. Walmart might have them. Vitamin Shoppe or most health food stores or Amazon.

Another person here recently had success with them too.

I tend to try some unconventional things that make sense to try when the usual treatments don't work. I didn't want to do crop surgery on my hen so I was glad they worked for me.

Colace is basically a softener and works throughout the digestive system. The gizzard with grit grinds foods, but if there is straw, it might be balled up and stuck in the crop. I hope that you can get her to the vet. Crop surgery is best done by vets but is something that can be done if an impaction is really stuck.

So something like this from Walmart? Hopefully no ingredients in there that's harmful to chickens. Crush it and put it in water I suppose? Or did you have an easier option? I'm not willing to do crop surgery unless a vet does it, but I'm sure that's $$$$$.

I'm not willing to do crop surgery on my own. I wouldn't have a clue and wouldn't have any idea how to even close it back up! I suspect she is stuffed past the crop, possibly in the gizzard or further. I have a vet appointment on Tuesday. Hoping I can get her on the mend before then or that she will even make it until then! :(

Mine was a just an enzyme mix. The pre and pro biotics can't hurt.
I'm not sure about the peppermint.

I just opened her beak and popped it in. I don't like to depend on them drinking anything on their own. I'd also give the enzyme time to work before the next crop massage.

I would imagine she's uncomfortable internally. Similar to when my friends dog ate a bag of dry dog food and they just had to wait for it to pass through.

I wouldn't worry too much as long as she is hydrated.

I wasn’t suggesting that you do crop surgery, since I think vets should be the only ones doing it. But your vet might suggest it. I hope she starts passing the material in her crop before then.

Hi! I had a hen that are a bunch of straw, she self ate all the watermelon she wanted, it took like a month but it worked, still alive and well two years later. I didn't use micanozole on her. I did use micanozole on another hen with sour crop. It healed up really fast I did the half inch twice a day for three days.
Thank you for giving me hope! Did either of yours get really lethargic like I described mine? And did you do crop massages and such for the straw eater?
