I used a Brinsea 20 Eco and never had hatch issues before so I didn't check the thermometer, but since they came 2 days early, I'm guessing the 'bator ran a little too hot. Would this have caused the leg problems?
I think you are correct; it was probably running a bit hot which would cause them to hatch early and also probably cause the leg problems. Not sure if this is what you have, but in The Chicken Health Handbook, Gail Damerow lists incubation "temperature too high" as the cause of splayed legs. Then again, she says "temperature too low" is the cause of crooked toes, so if you have both, you got me.

I don't have that book yet. I think I need to get a copy. I only have the leg problems, no crooked toes.

They are doing much better tonight! I think another 24 hours and 8 of them will look as good as new. The problem child is improving as well. It was able to stand momentarily with it's hobbles on. I'm very excited about the improvment in these chicks.

Awww! How cute! I love baby chicks! I sometimes wonder if "some" leg issues are genetic? I don't know?

I have 6 pullets and 2 roos so far. I have lost 1 to a predator, my dog, I have him in lockdown and he is supervised when out.

Here's a Eo story:

I have my EO's in my DH "old" shed that has no windows(yet). Well I open the doors to let them out. Well it was really windy out and I was working in my coop which is up a hill and about a block away? Well anyways an EO pullet came up to me and was peeping+pecking my shoes and I looked around and noticed she was by herself. So I picked her up and took her back down to her shed and seen that the door had blown shut! She had come up to where I was to tell me the other EO's were shut up and needed to be let out!

I took the hobble off the problem child this morning and this little chick is bound and determined to make it. He's walking already! And in the right direction (forward). He's very clumsy and takes lots of breaks. I didn't tell him he was handicapped so he doesn't know. After I took the hobble off, he pointedly ignored my attempts to get him to drink from the milk cap (he was drinking for me last night) and instead made his way over to the bottle to drink from the nipple just like the normal kids. He doesn't want me to treat him any differently.

CJ, that is great news. I have to admit I was thinking you were going to need to cull that baby. Really glad to hear he is going well.

Do any of your EOs have a black spot on their head or back? I have one with a couple of dots and I'm wondering if anyone else has seen that on any of their chicks.

That is a cute story reeree. Can't wait till they start getting more personality here.

Got two Brinsea spot check thermometers yesterday. Now I'm ready for my second hatch.

Good thing my DH hasn't made the coop yet... He would have to add an addition. That is if I have a successful second hatch.
Ordered:
6 EOs - James will probably send 8 eggs
6 olive eggers
6 blue eggers
6 BBS Orpingtons
6 Welsumers

30+ eggs! The original plan was for 6-8 hens and a roo. Haha
