I hear ya. My whites have not gotten very big? Not saying there's nothing there to tinker with though

What would you use them for since the all white will produce all white? I thought white was dominate over Columbian and would not let Colombian express itself? If that is the case what could you do with them?

Thanks James......after reading....the WHOLE durn thread.......I am just excited about getting started. I feel like I know all you guys and gals on here personally after reading all you have written. Someone who is ambitious should compile all this information and photos into "The Basque Book" I bet they would sell sell alot....and help promote the Breed. I would help but I am WAY out in the country and have to have sattelite internet and out-here it is still hard to stay on-line and its slow compared to cable or DSL...anyway LOOKING FORWARD to those babies....Thanks for replying.............Mike

Have you tried using a hotspot from your phone carrier? Its a lot faster than satellite over here. If you can get a 3g or higher connection you'll be in excellent shape.

There gonna be recessive from my thinking. Well if you wanted to work on a white Basque then its doable. Honestly the sky's the limit no matter what you wanted to do. The only thing that's a sure bet
dominate white is a white leghorn. There are other dominates but that's like finding a needle in a hay barn. I heard someone claiming they had dominate white Rhode island whites at one time.

Odd huh? Makes you think. There's a lot of Spanish genes ( sports ) to be pulled out of these Marradunas. Just curious to what can be got. You hatch enough and something else will pop out.

I can't even do that.......I retired from ATT after 38 years and I used to wire businesses for their customers to get the net,,,,,the closest one to me is 17 miles away!!!!! When we say 'out in the sticks here'...we actually mean we are alot farther out than the sticks go....but it is nice to drink coffee in the morning on your front porch in whatever type of clothing you slept in the night before...LOL

If everything that you all say is true...which I believe, we need to get these birds sanctioned by the APA and let everyone know how good they really are. A good buddy of mine is an apprentice APA judge and a NPIP tester and he says we can get that done.....and I'm in for whatever it takes. Nice looking breeder cage BTW.......I've also done woodworking forever...I'm kinda into "Turning" now .............Mike

Has anyone hatched off any solid white females?

I have one solid recessive white cockeral and another one that's still too young to sex... I really like the rw's. They are too closely related to breed though, even if it turns out to be a pair. I would love to get a few unrelated pullets and do some test breedings. Just need to put up a few more pens and build another coop.

The cockeral is about average to slightly above compared to his hatchmates, but he was fast to mature and is solid white with white legs. He's brave and curious.

My Marradunas have no fear to roam. Very curious and brave for sure. As hardy as the breed is I'd say that a couple sibling matings aren't gonna hurt the vitality of the breed. Just be careful how much you do it. Line breeding will be your best bet once you established what your looking for since the gene pool is so small . Just my opinion. Some may argue that fact but I've done this long enough to know what I can and can't breed back. The hardier the breed the better your chances.

Hey I'm a wood worker as well. Over 25 years I've been tinkering with it. I've turned a while too. Done a beautiful coco bolo bowl. So rich in color in color it looks wet. I love some fine furniture building. I believe the breed will eventually make it into the APA. But like anything its gonna take time and a lot of work.
I'm gonna post an email I got from someone today about there Basque they purchased from me. Here's what she emailed me.
Hi James,

Just have an update for you. You probably won't remember but I'm the one that had 8 Basques hatch out of 24 a while back....of course 6 were roosters!

So, now I have a breeding trio...(great roo buy the way)! LOVE 'em!

Anyway, I thought you would enjoy this story....

It was RECORD HEAT well over 100...I had a busy morning and didn't realize I had forgot to let the chickens out. I went out to collect the eggs in the afternoon and found 18 dead & dying chickens...

WE DID NOT LOSE A SINGLE BASQUE!!!

The chickens that survived had to be carried out and tended to...more eventually died.

NOT THE BASQUES!!!

The Basques just popped out the coop door like any other day and went off to do their thing!!! No Sweat!!! AMAZING!

Hardy breed? That's an understatement! The Basque have definitely earned their place here in the Southern California DESERT!

Its amazing how well this breed does in the Cold Canadian climate and the hot desert heat. Truly a remarkable breed.
