We had a little bit of excitement saturday night. We were sitting here eating dinner and heard a huge explosion that shook the house, rattling the windows. Scared the crap out of all of us. I stepped outside, nothing of ours was on fire and I didn't hear anything. However living out here surrounded by oil wells and oil tanks we thought we would just drive down the road to see if there was anything to report. There are very few houses out here. Not quit a mile up the road we saw a fire at one of the oil leases Kenny hauls out of for work. As we got closer we saw a truck with a tank on it engulfed flames.
Our first fear was it was one of Kennys coworkers. Then he noticed it was not one of their trucks but an old fire truck that was being used for circulating oil. We were the first ones there and my first thought was someone is either dead in that engulfed cab or we may need to pull somebody out of there before another explosion. The truck was parked just feet away from the tank. They had been pumping oil in or out of their truck. All of a sudden we saw someone run towards us. These are both kids in their early 20s. The one kid was burnt on his face and hands. he had been in the cab. When you see the pics you will not believe this kids luck. The other kid was on the top of the truck. As loud as this explosion was at our house I can't imagine how loud it was to these poor kids. The one I talked to said he thought his whole body exploded, he felt the explosion.
My camera would not take good pictures of the actual fire but we went back yesterday morning to take some. These will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. Both boys were taken to the hospital. We saw both of their pickup trucks in town this morning so they are out. I am sure they will have some burns to care for but I think the fact that it was winter and they had insulated coveralls and other winter clothes on saved them from a lot worse.
Behind the cab you see where the end of the tank exploded open almost against it? Well there was a fiberglass sleeper cab there. If that had not been there, that poor kid would be dead. It would have exploded in to the back of his head. The end of the tank looks like it is popped open like a tin can! The kid standing on top of that truck is lucky too. He could have been blown into a pipe or the tank, amything!
So that was our excitement! Our poor little dirt road hasnt seem that much traffic, ever! Between all of the Sherrif, police, highway patrol, ambulance and every one of the voulnteer fire dept in their own vehicles, it looked like a parade!
