. I also wanted to let you know @JRNash that the rats killed another one of my chickens today, though it was a young five week old cockerel...I found it dead in a pen with a pair of my asils. They were really good about the young chicks, and this cockerel would meander around them all the time,no damage done,so I know it was nt the asils, and the chick was laying probably six inches or less from the fence line, inside the pen, meaning the rat tried to steal the chick, but was stopped by my asils, which I will definitely be breeding more of now,and the chick was scalped,a the skin surrounding its crop was torn open, meaning the rat was trying to rip the chick's crop open and eat the partially digested food within, but didn't succeed because the asils stopped threat from getting any further than killing it...

I had a little Asil pullet that I saw once that had just caught a shrew. She was beating it against a rock when I saw her. She beat it up until she was sure it was dead and then swallowed it. Had a big lump in her throat, looked like a snake. This is her when she was young.

They really are. I'm hoping that I don't lose any more, because my wheaten Asil bantam rooster just died today...he got coryza, and the cold weather didn't treat him too well...otherwise,my others are doing pretty much just fine with it...we are kind of just playing out the survival of the fittest game right now, because when we got chickens from auction,we also unknowingly brought in infectious coryza...it is very hard to control...so we are gonna let nature take its course, and whatever survives is the stronger, better birds, and they will be the ones that breed...I was really upset that my Asil rooster died...I was gonna use him for my semi feral breed...but that won't happen now...but I guess that his weak immune system won't be passed on...that's one benefit...

Also, that's a really pretty hen. I have had my chickens eat shrews and mice before...it is very interesting to see them eat things that large, though they have to break every last bone in the animals body...
