My broilers had a respiratory infection,I was terrified my other birds would catch it

We managed to put the flock of 70+ birds put down within about an hour and a half...I told my dad once we started that I wanted to just do them all that round,because I didn't want to have to go through that pain again...it was hard. Especially getting used to not having the birds around. As of Saturday,they have been gone two weeks,but I still am not fully accustomed to them being gone,and wish they weren't,but I know it was truly the most ethical and humane thing to do...I will be repopulating in the spring though. I suppose that's a good thing. I will have largefowl orpingtons for sure. But not sure about others yet.

No Art. it took a 14 day round of tetracycline. then a 14 day clean out.

It only affected the broilers. They started responding to the antibiotic by day three.

Cassidy,you have my respect. I was prepared to put down 50birds. only 21 of which were broilers. It was very hard to even consider the possibility that I might have to put them down. The BYC network gave me the information that pulled them through.
I applaud your strength and your compassion for making a very difficult decision and following through.
My birds all have a role to play. Some for eggs,some for meat. Some just to satisfy my curiosity. No matter what their purpose,it's my responsibility to ensure they have a quality life.

the guy that sold me tetratrycicline told me 7 days and I did it, some got better but some didn't. I went back weeks later and he told me 14 days but I have not got around to it because I cant afford it . the three that are sick are getting better but as soon as I am able will get them started on tetracyc again

Sorry to hear that Art. I gave mine a heaping tablespoon and a half to a gallon of water. I mixed two gallons a day for 14 days. The results were immediate. The labored breathing and bible eye started clearing up by day 3. a few individual's took longer. At day two their energy levels were back up.
