Warm, moist heat 4 times a day. Then if it comes to a head at home, I've been known to sterilize a small needle and open a small area of the head to assist with drainage- this eases pain and pressure.
That being said, here comes the RN disclaimer: Take every bit of your antibiotics EXACTLY as prescribed, then go in and have it lanced. They will be able to get out far more gunk with far less damage.
BTW peeps- I could go into details about all the yummy gross abcesses I take care of in my job as an ER nurse- Interested? Hmmm? Takers?

LOL Sorry to gross you all out. You don't have to read it you know! I'm the same way though, if a title says "gross" or "graphic" I'm there!

EC - you're brave to do that for your dad. I don't think we have Fairy soap here. Maybe there's an equivalent? I might try to look up that burnt tar ointment.

Oh yes, he's sleeping on the couch downstairs at night. I don't need a surprise in the middle of the night....

I would put moist heat on it, and I would also lance it if it were my DH, but that's just me... Get a razor blade, a lancet used for blood sugar testing, something and just open it up gently. He'll feel so much better. Follow it with some antibiotic ointment or something...
