Experienced Trader Joe hatchers

Thank you! One more question though. I bought both fertile eggs from trader joes and whole foods. The date on them was 226 and 223. They are refrigerated and are now being set at room temp for the night. Will they still hatch even at that date? What kind will hatch from the brown eggs?

Those are Julian dates, so 8/11 & 8/14, so they should be fine. I would bring them up to room temperature and put them in!

Well alexthechicken, today is day 232 (remember it's a leap year), so one is 6 days old, the other 9 days old. Mine were 8 days old and of the 8 I set, one was not fertile (checked when it didn't develop), and one died early on ( the other 4 we ate and checked fertility, they were all fertile) And currently, 6 made it to lockdown. So I think you have a good chance!

I'm really hating "LockDown" cause I can't candle them and there is no way to know if they're ok or dying or anything! I'm totally fretting! Ugh! :p

Cool! It's so much fun! Mine are almost 6 weeks old already! They're feisty little buggers, but will settle down on your lap after you pick 'em up. So cute too! My girls will ride on my shoulders, but they poop there too, LOL. I've learned to put a cloth diaper down now

I ended up with only two hens, so I have another batch in the incubator right now on day 8! Really want hens for eggs! Unfortunately, I'm still building the coop! They really need it as they're getting too big for the brooder! Almost got things in order though, hopefully by mid-week the coop with be done if not the run ;P

I candled my eggs (again) today and they're such wiggle worms! I had one break due to my dropping the thermostat on it... oops, and another that died off early, the other 10 are doing great and hopefully will all hatch

Very nice thread!
Thank you all for your photos. "iPad" no photos yet..
Q)1 if hatched from a brown egg with the hen produce
brown eggs? We are just beginning. Our girls were born
July 7 or 8 2012. Then we went to get more chicks
thinking of the odds of having a roo.. 15 weeks old now..

Low & behold our Katherine made the "fabulous" crow
this morning... Now Kent, out partargarge silkie is confirmed..
We are so eggcited. We hear that silkie are the quietest of all..
Q) 2. The brown eggs from WF, are they typically Marans?
We would prefer brown.. I guess we could call them?
Any way... Keep the photos comming please..

I was up so earlie this morning because yesterday morning,
Saturday around 5:30-6ish I saw what I thought was the moon.
Riight above the Sun.. I took a photo with my iPhone. That
Moon or planet was not there this morning.. I told my DH
about what I saw, he told me that there was some asteroid
that past our solar system yesterday.. I am going to have to
do some searching??? One of my clients told me about a mystery
planet called nabiru? Anyone familiar ???

Each breed lays different colored eggs or white eggs. The color of the egg a chick hatches out of is the color it will lay or a little darker/lighter, but tinted - save for easter eggers EE, they can grow up to lay very different colors.

Marans lay a very dark chocolate color. If you buy super dark brown eggs, it could be from Marans. but I think it's unlikely. They probably use a sex linked bird?
