Experiment - 48 Duck Eggs in a Janoel 48 Incubator

FWIW, when "lockdown" comes, I'm going to fill the entire bottom of the Janoel with water. That seems to be the only way I can get the humidy to 70% or more.

Oh good lord, if I filled mine up, I think it would shoot to 90% or more. But I'll fill up several channels to start. I'm working on a tubing system to allow me to selectively fill up channels without having to open the bator. We'll see how that goes. I have the weekend to figure it out, before lockdown next Monday. You should be getting close to lockdown huh?

First time I used it as a hatcher I tried just the two channels, but couldn't get the humidity over 65%, so now I just fill the entire bottom. RH in my house is about 20%, so it can be hard for me to control the humidity in the Janoel.

Well I candled and weighed all mine tonite. All 7 ducks and final turkey appear to be well. Good movement in all of them. I'm a little perplexed by the weight loss. I assume the porousness of some eggs has caused my differences. By day 21, the target loss is 11.76%. I have one that has only lost 8.71% but I have one that has already lost 14%. I was shooting for total loss of 14% at day 25. The rest are between 10-13%, which I'm ok with.
Also most of the eggs look very full, as I would expect by now, but a couple have a good bit of clear area in the bottom (with blood vessels running through it). While others are alot more full down closer to the bottom.
What do you make of that?

Oh, and the ones with more clear on the bottom, I can see "pushing" action from the bottom. I hope these 2 babies aren't upside down!

I decided to put the lower loss ones in one corner, and the ones with higher weight loss in another corner. I added a little water to the corner that already has sufficient weight loss. I have fan circulation, so I don't know that this will help, but we'll see.
Maybe I'm just being too scientific! But I really want to figure out what works for me.

My experiment is turning into a disaster... I'm too lazy and forgetful, so I'm forever not turning them and I've had four power failures.

Wow, I'm sorry you are having such a rough time! Why have you had 4 power failures??

I woke up to one pip this morning, well it looks like he has smacked it good in two spots right beside each other. It hasn't progressed any more yet. Then about 5:00 this evening, I noticed a pip in another one. So at this point, I've got 2 in progress. Humidity is staying surprisingly consistent and temps are good too. So I'm hopeful! Thanks for asking!!

My power failures are from my own stupidity and using an inexpensive extension cord that falls out of the wall if a cat rubs on it, which is what has happened.

Oh dang, that sucks. My dogs would probably do the same thing! But I have to say, after 18 hours in very cold temps, and mine are still living, I still wouldn't give up. They sure are strong, resilient little boogers. If these guys make it, they are getting names from Sons of Anarchy! Tough guys lol

I'm doubt the power outages had much to do with the losses, but I'd be willing to bet my laziness in turning them sure did. BTW, it's day 28 for my quackers and have a couple of pips and a couple of ducklings.
