Explaining Chicken Math

So my plan was, 6, 10, 12 14 hens, that’s 14 hens @ 7.5 avg weight = 105lbs of poultry.

So, ((13 Standard Breed x 7.5lbs) + ((2 Bantam Cochins x 2.5lb) ÷ 50% Hen Probability) + ((3 Bantam Silkies x 2lb) ÷ 50% Hen Probability) + ((2 Polish x 4lb) ÷ 50% Hen Probability)) less a 5lb Bantam Cochin Roo Error = 102lbs of poultry

Total mass, 102!

102 ÷ 7.5 = 13.6 less .6 because it would be just wrong to have 6 tenths of a chicken, that puts me at 13.

I’m good right?

Looks like i may even need 1 more.

You definitely need a couple more. 13 chickens can't even guarantee a dozen eggs a day! How will you grow your egg business?

Lol My husband can't figure out why I want '' 6-8'' for our first flock. Probably because tsc had a 6 bird minimum. We're not buying from there now but that number was stuck in my head. Now planning for 8 because I know I can get away with it. Who knows what next year will look like. We'll be building coops 3*and 4 probably. Lol

sepaditty 1, you gave tipounds good advise about not counting chicks or roos, but you forgot one important aspect. after subtracting the chicks and roos, divide the remainder by two. helps a lot to confuse ds (dear spouse). hope this helps.

The chicks don't count. They don't lay eggs. And some of them are probably roos. They don't count either.

You're fine.

You guys are crazy. Hubby and I are over here LOBO. We lost count of our chickens. My son asked the other day how many we had & I told him I didn't know. Somehow my 5 year old grand daughter heard the phrase "crazy chicken lady" and called me that. HAHA! I'm SURE my son or daughter in law didn't call me that!

I am a victim of chicken math and haven't even started getting my chicks yet.

You see it began with guineas. Hubbies fault I dare say and it is true as he chose
guineas it was his idea! Wanted 15, excellent we are on track minimum order is
15 perfect because you order 15 and even with an "extra" if they put one in we should
still have 15.
Okay all is well =).................

I want a few chickens hubby loves the white crested polish chickens and said I could
have 5.
Okay now we have a problem, can't find them local, everywhere I have called is out.
Back to ordering (date to be shipped May 19th). Only you have a 15 chick minimum.
So...... 5 white crested black polish has turned in to 10 and I couldn't very well order
15 he would figure out there was something a miss if they all came in as White crested.
So....I ordered 5 Splash cochin.
We all know for a fact hatcheries make errors, I mean I have never once ordered from
a hatchery before or even owned a chick or guinea but for being a valued customer
I could have accidentally rated extra white crested and 5 splash?
What do you think does it sound plausible?

15 guinea + 5 errrr(10) white crested + 5 Splash = 20 total doesn't it ??

Yes! And I actually don't think you have to count the guinneas at all & here's why. 1) they're his, not yours. Not your problem. 2) they're not chickens. So...they don't count.

Now, the 5 white crested he wanted shouldn't count towards the 20 allotted to you. They were his choice!

So that only leaves you with 10 chickens. You were allowed 20, so you are allowed 10 get 10 more.

The hatchery won't let you order 10. You'll have to get 15. What can you do? You didn't write the policy.

Well come to think the farm and home has plenty of chicks. This being my first time maybe I should get like 5 or 6 chicks to practice with. I wouldn't want harm to come to hubbies white crested...

Are your Cochins bantams? If so, don't forget bantams only count as 1/2 a chicken

Splendid explanation! I

chicken math. And just yesterday, my hubby said himself that the guineas don't count. So, we can add the guinea rule to the bantam rule and chick rule. Oh- and the boy rule..... :gig
