Extremely swollen foot!! Bumblefoot, scaly leg mites, or something else!?

I doubt that it is MS, since it is only in the one foot. You could get her tested for MS, which is similar to MG, but is mostly a respiratory diesease, while MS can have mild respiratory symptoms or not, and MS only affects the bones and joints.

I would not spend the money on a vet unless the vet was familiar with chickens and chicken diseases. But that is up to you. They could however do an xray and tell you if it is broken or sprained with soft tissue swelling. I would try to determine if she is limping. You could limit her activity for a week or two and prevent her from jumping up and down on a roost. Has she been roosting lately?

well vet could do an x-ray and some blood work and tell you what it is, if it's MS/MG they are carriers for life anyway and your flock should be closed nothing in or out so that might be a problem for the vet to see the hen

Hmm that’s a good point. Didn’t think about bringing disease into the vet or possibly even bringing disease home??

But was wondering if blood work or an x ray would be a good idea. Could maybe tell if there were kidney issues if it was gout?

Thank you, this is very helpful.

We do have a vet that I think is familiar with chickens and the exam fee isn’t too bad but I am sure x rays and blood work and stuff will cost a lot so I’d rather not do it unless necessary. But they are pets so I’m willing to if you guys think it would help. But I’m also not sure what they could tell me that you guys can’t?

This is the local vet.

And okay, I will watch her closely tomorrow and try to figure out if she is limping and also get some better pictures of her foot/leg.

Do you think I should bring her in the house and/or put her in a crate or something???

And yeah I think so. She was on the roost tonight but up next to the wall. And on the lower roost.

No.
Leave her with the flock.
You will not only stress her but stress everybody by taking one away. Leave her be.

I would crate her inside the coop, so that she doesn’t jump down and keep reinjuring the foot. Xrays are $100 at the minimum for one at my vet, and $150 for two.

Gout usually looks like a lumpy foot and toes, usually on both feet, while MS tends to affect both the ankles, but the toes usually look fairly normal. Here is a picture of possible gout—note the lumpy toes and swollen ankles:

Okay thanks. I’ll leave her then. So you don’t think I should crate her inside the coop either?

Probably everyone has it if they can catch it

Can they have it with no symptoms? Everyone else is acting fine. Even she is acting fine except for her leg being swollen.

Okay thanks. This is good to know. I’m glad because it’s expensive haha

Okay, I will do that. Can I let her out during the day and just crate her at night or crate her all the time??

And oh wow that’s pretty expensive although not as bad as I thought it’d be for an exotic haha

Ours is probably more though. The website says it’s like $69 just for an office visit. And I think even our regular non exotic animal vet for the cat (and dog when we had one) is like $50 or $60 for the office visit.

Thanks, I think her toes look normal but I am not sure. I will get some clearer and closer pictures of her feet tomorrow.
