Exhibition birds tend to be (much) larger than hatchery stock. Perhaps that is what you are referencing? NYREDS is correct that over 20% from the correct weight is a disqualification. Can you state the specific place in the standard that relates that a pound over is okay?

There is a difference between a big bird and one that is over standard weight.

Minorcas standard weight is 9 lbs Cock 7 1/2 Hens

My 2009 standard states for Mediterranean Breeds,
1. No cut for first pound
2. Two (2) points for each additional pound*

* Until disqualifying weight is reached.

Now under DQ's and Weight it states that a 20% more or less than listed weight is a DQ
Also note that the standard stated that the fowl will receive the pound cut for any fraction over the first 1/4 pound of each pound over.
So if your Cock Bird is 10 lbs 4 oz. it is 2 lbs over and not 1 lbs 4 oz. over. Now that your bird is 2 lbs over it is now a DQ since anything over 10.8 lbs should be a DQ.

Well at the shows i attend They dont use a scale anyway so the weight doesnt really matter unless they are Really skinny or feel way to heavy They wont get disqualified

Trust me, judges know what different birds weights should feel like. I have certainly seen birds DQed in Arizona for weight. No, unless it is a serama tabletop show, there are not usually scales present, but that will not prevent a bird from being DQed on weight. The lack of scales might make challenging the weight (if someone decided to put up the protest fee) an iffy proposition.

I'm always sorry to hear about judges who "like" a characteristic that conflicts with the Standard. It's one of the many criticisms that are leveled against judges in general. I can't answer for judges in Arizona but I have disqualified birds both over & under weight. I've seen other judges do the same. If the weight discrepency is large enough a scale isn't needed.
In years past birds were weighed before being caged. There are mant who advocate a return to that practice. If we did go back to that a lot of birds would be disqualified.

I know most of the Arizona licensed judges, and do not know any that would condone incorrect weights on birds. In fact at a show last year I was talking about bird's weight with one of them, although in this case it was underweight, not over.

I find it had to believe that someone has a 14 lb Minorcas that is pure bred, 14 pounds is a full pound over the Standards weight of a Jersey Giant.
To me a fowl that is 5 lbs over Standard weight is not Bred to Standard nor is it Show Quality and should be DQ'ed at any APA Show.
