Hi! I'm new to raising chicks and noticed today one of our 5 week old midnight majesty maran had an eye she wasn't wanting to open/was squinting when she did. On closer inspection she is a little bald around the eye and there was a slight amount of clear pus that came out.
Her other eye is normal and she is acting alert and scavenging, running around like normal so I'm thinking it's an injury but wanted to get some more experienced eyes on it 🙂 what do you think?
We cleaned it with some warm water and a q-tip and separated her just in case.
I've included a picture of both her eyes so you can see the difference.
Thank you!

With the swollen sinus area and watery eye with gunk, a respiratory disease might be possible. But an injury might also be the cause. Has she had any sneeze, crackly breathing, or nasal drainage? Can you look up inside into the roof of the beak for any white or pale yellow pus? For now, I would get some saline eye wash at your pharmacy or eye product aisle at your favorite store to drop into the eye twice a day until drainage is gone. Also get a tube of Terramycin eye ointment at your feed store or plain Neosporin to apply into the eye twice a day after each cleaning.

She seems to have a little nasal drainage on closer inspection, but otherwise sounding normal and no sneezing or anything. Will have to try a little later today if I can see into the roof of her beak, we have brought her inside away from the others.

She started bouncing back with the antibiotics but believe it was too much of a fight for her little body and we lost herlast night 💔

Oh, I am sorry that you lost her. This would be a good time to find out the cause of her sickness, if you still have access to her body. Your state poultry vet can perform a necropsy and test for MG and other respiratory diseases which could be spread to other chickens.
