Facebook Foolishness

My Cousin who is a detective use facebook and myspace to catch people all the time.

He even caught a wowen who had frauded my wife and I in a adoption scam by finding her on myspace and then "got friendly" with her online. When she gave up her phone number he passed the number over to the US Marshals and she was in jail the next day.

Dumb Dumb Dumb

Needless to say I don't post much personal stuff unless it is positive. I tend to post quotes, verses, proverbs, etc. because I would hope that I can touch someone on my friends list and uplift them for the day.

I used to have mine set for "friends of friend" mainly I guess to make it easier for friend of friends to find me.
And while I wasn't friend with my boss, one of my friends must have been.....not that I posted anything I wouldn't say to her face in real life, but the way she was sneaking around bothered me

needless to say, now all of my posts are default to "friends-only EXCEPT a few certain tattletale type people". If I have something just goofy to share, I'll change the setting for THAT post to be visible to pretty much everyone coz it won't matter. The reason I keep THEM on my friends list at all is to keep tabs on them LOL How is it they say, keep your friends close and your enemies closer....

I do have some leeway because Grandma could be rather salty at times, so.....

Yeah, that's why I go with the 'front page of the newspaper' thought...

You don't have to use your real name.

Set up an account in your real name. - It is your professional public face. Keep it like that

Set up an anonymous nicknamed account that only those you want to know about know... Boundaries exist in our lives for a reason. Facebook erases them and many many teens still don't get that or understand just how long they will pay for indiscretions we older folk got away with in the teen years.

^There's a point... if a kid posts that they snuck a sip of Dad's beer when he was in the loo will CPS descend? OR worse... posting that Mom LET you try a sip of her wine... then it's contributing to he delinquency, MIP, and CPS all rolled into one.

DS wants a FB... all his friends have one... his cousin has one... actually he's claiming to be born in 1990.

I told DS when you can answer the b-day question honestly and FB allows you then you can have one.

If other kids' parents don't monitor their usage, what they're saying, what they're posting for anyone to see that's their problem... doesn't mean I'm going to be a crappy parent and let mine do it.

Oddly he didn't argue... guess maybe he could see the logic? Seems unlikely from a 12yo, but stranger things HAVE happened.

Last year a student of mine lost his full ride four year scholarship over a picture on his facebook page. My kids heard me discussing this and we discussed it over dinner - was it right or wrong? I think if your kids hear you pondering the good and bad of something they learn how to make better decisions.

Your 12 year old may just have understood......

It's not just facebook, even on BYC whatever you post is available to anyone. People tend to forget that ANYTHING on the internet is out there for the world to see. I use Terrie's rule for the most part, but I suspect my grandmother was saltier!
