Facial / comb swelling in 21 week old pullet

When I took Wynonna out to give her the antibiotic, she sounds wheezy/stuffy in the head. I think the swelling is affecting her breathing now.
Otherwise, she is still acting normal. So sad.

Her swelling is so big, that it is possible that it is affecting her sinuses. That is sad that she is having breathing problems already. Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in and help. How do you feel about contacting your state vet poultry lab, and asking about how to get a necropsy if you should lose her? I know it is sudden, but would you want to find out what has been going on to make her so sick, or to confirm that she had cancer? I can understand if you cannot do that.

I've already been to Cornell's website. I will for certain get a necropsy if we have to euthanize her. I'd want to know what it is for certain.

I've contacted Cornell regarding a necropsy. They want $125. I think that is a ridiculous price.
Sadly, nothing I've tried has had any impact on the swelling in Wynonna's head and face. Although she is still eating, drinking and pooping normally, I feel that the quality of her life is poor. She makes a mess of herself trying to eat. She can't see well because of the swelling. She sleeps or just lays on the ground with her wings and tail down and her head almost touching the ground. I can't bear to watch her like this any longer.
My neighbor will humanely euthanize her tonight for us. I cannot do it.
I had no idea I would get so attached to a chicken. She has always been my favorite. She beeps like a finch and has always been gentle and sweet. I will miss her.

Sorry for your loss. Each state has a different charge for a necropsy. Some are as little as $20, while others charge $200. Sometimes a necropsy can be helpful to diagnose a disease which can affect other chickens. That is a steep price for most of us. Sometimes we can do a necropsy at home ourselves, and take pictures of organs or anything out of the ordinary to get some opinions here on BYC. It also helps us to learn what goes on inside them.

I have looked at other people's necropsy pictures and they don't bother me. I could never kill let alone cut up my own animal. It's not in me. I know it would have been great to know what caused Wynnona's swelling but I can't justify that cost when I am on a tight budget and have more animals to care for. Frustrating.
