Fake eggs

I like golf balls since they're cheap and easy to get, and you can easily tell that they're not real eggs, even if groping blindly under a hen, yet the birds readily accept them as egg analogs.

Most chickens don't think to much of golf balls. But my older BO would push out the fake eggs and golf balls out of the nest. So we ended up filling a real egg with sand and sealing it with hot glue gun. That one survived the nesting box until the kids dropped it. No big deal because the other new chicks cought on already.

I used 1 yellow and 1 neon pink plastic Easter eggs, filled with dirt and glued shut. Now the funny part, while the bright plastic eggs worked great.... they preferred the pink over the yellow and then literally destroyed the yellow one. I was just glad to find all the pieces and that nobody ate it!

I just used a golf ball because there was one on the property when we bought the house. I love that sand filled egg idea.

Hey guys, our girls are 18 week old EE and not yet laying. I currently have a couple golf balls in each of our 2 nest boxes. Has anyone who used golf balls found they are a good enough fake egg or do you think I should get some actual fake eggs? Which do hens seem to prefer? Maybe their wondering where their tiny golf clubs are?!

Golf balls should be fine! I used ping pong balls for mine and I've only had 2 lawn eggs in 3 months. I suppose it depends on how picky your hens are though lol some can be finicky

I also started with golf balls because I found 2 on the property when we moved in, along with a small dog house (which I later fixed up as a nest box).
