Hello, fellow hookers!  Sorry I have been MIA but have been working on other SWAPs, and have made several scarves, hats and headbands for people that have placed orders.  It is finally getting to be cold her in Tennessee and everyone realizes they don't have anything to keep them warm and needs a scarf or head gear NOW!  LOL

Have a few squares left to make but should have them done by the end of next week.

Kass... can you please PM me your address so when they are ready to ship, I can get them out.  I will let you know when they go so you can expect them.  I agree also to sending the extra square to the person that had to drop due to a family emergency.

The squares posted are beautiful!  Writer... love the hats.

Here is the most recent headband/scarf set.

SWAP square:

I got a brilliant idea! I went with it... and here is the results for another square... Man! What was I thinking! I had to tack these on with glue to keep them in place before sewing them down.  I really like how it came out and will do another to keep for myself but geez... the sewing and tails just about did me in!  The background is a basic granny in Ivory Tweed.  There are 30 individual leaves in purple, navy, forest, lettuce, terra cotta, bronze, burnt pumpkin and sungold.

WOW!!!! I am in love with the scarf/hat set....heck what am I saying, I'm in love with it all!! lol You are extremely talented! Do you sell your items in an etsy shop?

Ditto on the hat/scarf.  beautiful!!!

on another topic, I spent all day yesterday (I work nights) doctoring a sick pullet.  I went out in the AM and observed she had attempted to pass what I think is her first egg.  It was HUGE.  her vent prolapsed and she could not releive herself of the egg which technically speaking was on the ouside of her body.  There was poo and blood and ice .....it was aweful.
I was horrified.  I have never seen anything like this before!!

Anyway, thanks to google, and some searching on this site, I decided to bathe the darling in warm water and tear the end of the egg, which was soft, to release the pressure.  I put preparation H "down there" and lubed her with the only thing I had - vitamin e oil - and tried to put her innerds back in.  They wouldn't go - the swelling was too bad.

So I seperated her and put her in a kennel in the garage and turned the heat down to 50.  (She was previously outside in -10 so I didnt want her too warm)

I checked every couple hours, gave bath, applied the preparation and oil to her, and put her back.  Rinse and repeat with no luck.  No new poo.  No evidence of her eating.  unknown on the water - thats a big maybe.

So at 6P, I took her to my friend 15 miles away to have her look at hte pullet.  My friend has had chickens for years and agreed to put her down since I dont have the guts.  She looked at the bird though and decided to give it a go and got the innerds in :)

I am going to pick her up in a few hours and take her home to the garage for a day of rest.

I will re-evaluate in 24 hrs.  If she is spritely, I will give her a chance.

Anyone else go thru this?  Am I just prolonging the inevitable?  Could she have a chance?

And since she is going to be inside for a few days minimum, does this mean she is a house-bird until spring??  (I'll do it if I have to...)

I am sorry to hear about your girl. Knock on wood I haven't experienced this yet, but I know I would absolutely freak out!! I hope and pray she doesn't have any further problems. :)

I hope everyone had a blessed Thanksgiving and got all the deals they wanted. Years ago when my kids were little I did the Black Friday events. But now that I am older and in pain 99% of the time, there is no way I would even attempt it! Not to mention, I love Cyner Mondays, and shopping at my leisure in my pajamas! :p

I had never even heard of a chicken doing this, but I have certainly learned a lot.

I learned that if you wrap a full sized bath towel around a flighty hen, it seems to sooth them and make them a lot easier to handle.

When I saw her, I noticed she was in the nest box fluffed up with her head in toward her body making her look like she had no neck. she was tipped forward and had her bum in the air. I saw the egg on the outside of her body, still wrapped in and stuck to her "innerds" (I dont know what to call it.) It was horrible, I had no idea what I was looking at at first. The innerds were bright red, so made the egg look all bloody. There was blood, but not too much. There was also lots of urate and a significant amount of that was frozen to her poofy little butt feathers. Poor kid. I freaked out and called my friend and the veterinary work began...

I think the BEST thing we did was the nice warm water baths on her bum. I am doing 2 a day and drying her completely before taking her out to the barn.

Since the egg was soft, and pretty much out, I tore the shell to releive pressure. I did not do this until after I had bathed her. It helped loosen her up and I think make passing it easier/possible.

The vitamin e-oil I applied and the Preparation H seemed to have helped. Internal organs need to stay MOIST so vaseline was also appied liberally. Incidentally, I have read conflicing info online about the Preparation H. There are different varieties and some include pain killers. I went with the simple, regular strength, no pain killer variety since I wasn't sure how she would metabolize all of that.

I had no clue how to 'push" eveything back in, I used a wet paper towel and was a little too apprehensive, I think. My friend gloved up, lubed up with vaseline (can also use plain KY jelly or olive oil) and she inserted her finger into the chicken's vent about an inch. I thought I was going to puke. But, the hen, who was swaddled in a towel, tolerated that pretty well.

She still prolapses a little, but if you touch it with a gloved finger, she sucks it in by herself.

I am applying preparation H 2x a day and vaseling 2x a day for a total or 4 (at a minimum) applications to keep things moist and lubed.

I am feeding really wet prepared oatmeal with a little elecrolytes mixed in 2x day, some fresh veggies, and scratch mixed with her layer ration to try to keep things "loose" for her. She gets free choice water and oyster shell. She is eating and drinking freely. She is also pooping (and it looks normal) and scratching around in the deep straw in her area. (I sprinkled lots of scratch to help convince her to exercise as my hope is that it will help improve muscle tone down there. can't exactly train her to do kegels....)

I have her in the barn now with the other girls in a wire hospital pen with a heat lamp right over her. Outside temps are down to -10 during the nights, but the temp in her area is MUCH warmer than the rest of the pen. It is about 6 square feet. No perch. She seems to be walking normally, though she is still less active than her "sisters." As she (hopefully) improves, I'll gradually lift the light like I did when she was a baby. Much better than a house chicken - hubby would kill me!. The lamp has a red bulb and I have omitted all other artificial light from the barn to help slow egg production (I hope).

She is definately not out of the woods. I dread the next egg. I pray she will be OK.

Oh no they stole my edit button!

Recieved btown's blocks and they are very pretty!!!

I am not posting the pics of her blocks only b/c she already did a great job of posting the pics.

Mine are on the way. I hope they make it okay. I had to get stamps for the return trip. I didn't want to debate with the clerk. If you just reuse the box and tape the envelop to the box things should be fine. I also put in a ticket for Delivery conformation too. I wrote the number down at the clerks suggestion. so I have it. It's not priority cuz I'm in no hurry. I still haven't put together the last bunch of squares.
