Ditto on the hat/scarf. beautiful!!!

on another topic, I spent all day yesterday (I work nights) doctoring a sick pullet. I went out in the AM and observed she had attempted to pass what I think is her first egg. It was HUGE. her vent prolapsed and she could not releive herself of the egg which technically speaking was on the ouside of her body. There was poo and blood and ice .....it was aweful.
I was horrified. I have never seen anything like this before!!

Anyway, thanks to google, and some searching on this site, I decided to bathe the darling in warm water and tear the end of the egg, which was soft, to release the pressure. I put preparation H "down there" and lubed her with the only thing I had - vitamin e oil - and tried to put her innerds back in. They wouldn't go - the swelling was too bad.

So I seperated her and put her in a kennel in the garage and turned the heat down to 50. (She was previously outside in -10 so I didnt want her too warm)

I checked every couple hours, gave bath, applied the preparation and oil to her, and put her back. Rinse and repeat with no luck. No new poo. No evidence of her eating. unknown on the water - thats a big maybe.

So at 6P, I took her to my friend 15 miles away to have her look at hte pullet. My friend has had chickens for years and agreed to put her down since I dont have the guts. She looked at the bird though and decided to give it a go and got the innerds in :)

I am going to pick her up in a few hours and take her home to the garage for a day of rest.

I will re-evaluate in 24 hrs. If she is spritely, I will give her a chance.

Anyone else go thru this? Am I just prolonging the inevitable? Could she have a chance?

And since she is going to be inside for a few days minimum, does this mean she is a house-bird until spring?? (I'll do it if I have to...)

She can survive this. I haven't had one prolapse that badly but it is possible for her to make it. You'll just need to exercise patience. And no, she doesn't have to be an inside bird from now on. Once she's feeling normal she'll let you know she wants out of that crate. Hopefully it will coincide with a sunny, warmish day.

I picked her up. She looks way better. Brought her home set up a warm pen inside the coop, turned off the lights except the red heat bulb over her. Going with low protein diet, and she is segregated but in view of her friends. Should be warm enough. I made her wet oatmeal w electrolytes. She ate that and some scratch and is pooping normally. There is hope!! I will take pics of the new digs :). I hope she makes it!

Glad your chicken is doing better. I have no experience at all, but would think the real test will be the first egg she lays after the prolapse.

One of my Muscovy ducks prolapsed once, it was from laying a HUGE egg and I didn't catch it until at least 1 day afterwards. The flesh had started developing a scab to protect it by the time i found it. I gave her a warm bath to wash it off and cleaned the scab off first. then used a fair amount of vaseline to push it back in... wasn't easy because her "puckerer" was still in tact with this large blob of flesh hanging outside of it but once i got part of it in the rest went in quickly on it's own. I was super worried afterwards and checked on her daily because I had read if it happens once it will almost definitely happen again. Thankfully she never prolapsed again and went on to lay plenty more eggs and have plenty more babies.

lad you have a freind that was willing to help you out with it, i know i was totally freaking out when i found my girl.

Make sure she has choice of oyster shell. The reason it happened was because of a soft shelled egg. If she gets enough calcium, she can put a hard shell on her eggs and they'll slide right out.

Can you post what, exactly, your friend did? I know when I had a slight prolapse, it was days before I could get it to stay in. I'd like the information for future reference, and hopefully, I won't need it at all.

if you put preparation H on it yes the hemorrhoids cream it will help with the swelling and healing. I used it on a chick but since the bird was so young (prolapse not due to egg laying) was told it would have problems all it's life and best to cull. If you think about it the things we do and go through for our birds, it is funny, I think I worry about them more than I ever did with the kids, dogs or cats.

Sebocat-I'm glad your chicken is better. Thank you for taking such good care of her.
