They are for inside

on those days where it's a little chilly. And for work. I work grave shift answering 911 and dispatching for police, fire and EMS. I get chilly, and these leave fingers open for typing!
Winters not so bad. You just have to dress for it. The horses get fuzzy, dogs stay in the house, and this will be my first winter with chickens. I hear they do pretty well.
They have a big 8x10 coop for 12 hens with lots of roost space, a raised box for sand baths, good ventilation ( I think) and I will go with deep litter for cozy toes:). I have a heat lamp, but don't plan on plugging it in unless they are getting too cold. Only thing I worry about is keeping combs from frost biting. My barred rock has a nice one! My understanding though is the good ventilation will help.
Oh it never occured to me it would get cold enough you would need glove inside!!!!!

That deserves two smileys falling over in horror!!!!!!!!

Well I spent most of my yesterday talking under my breath about your kinsmen in OK (dispatchers) lol

I don't own enough cloths to make that bearable, wal mart doesn't carry enough clothes to make that bearable!!!!!!!!

I have heard good ventilation helps keep combs from frostbite, I have also heard applying vaseline can help too on those bitter nights, but no actual experience.

After our first and only frostbite episode, we applied vaseline to their combs whenever the temperature threatened to go down to freezing. It worked.

I'll give the Vaseline a try :)

As for gloves inside, it gets chilly cuz hubby likes the temp low at 60 to 65 degrees. Me? I'm a 70 degree girl ;). The weather isn't that bad. It will be freezing or below ( usually above zero ) until April or so. It only hits 20 below or colder for a few weeks. That's nothing compared to Fairbanks, where I used to live. It was 60 below for 10 days once. Now THAT is cold!

Personally, I prefer this to the damp cold of other places. We visited Oregon last November, I wanted to die.....I could never get warm! Guess its all in what you are used to :)

My brother lives in Delta Jct, AK similar I'm assuming to Fairbanks. He actually comes home (to Maine) to vacation for the winter....lol He will be here til May 1st then head back to Alaska for the summer. Our worst is -20 and if the wind is whipping its worse. As the years go by I seem to tolerate the cold less and less. Ah well, can get alot of crocheting done!

It is Oct, it you have freezing temps until April that is 6 months or 1/2 the whole year ............................................... You know there are 4 seasons right????????? That means one season shouldn't be alotted more then 3 months!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ONLY 20 below zero!!!!!!!!!!! I start complaining when the temps fall below 50 ABOVE zero.

It's funny, I went to TX in March one year. It was 30 below t home, and 70 above in TX. I was so hot I got dizzy and thought I was going to puke. I can't handle heat! 90 and 100 plus would kill me! But I was born here, so it's what we are used to :)

And yes Delta is a lot like Fairbanks, but they get more wind. I think that makes it quite a bit worse!

Inquiring minds might like to know-The skein of love chocolate lasted 20 and a half square borders, the traditional 3dc & 1ch.

I laid out the squares this morning. There are nine color combinations thus far. I'll take a picture & post it later, along with one close-up for detail.
