Fall Hatch! Anybody with me??

Yeah, there is a variety of sizes among the Turken eggs. She must have some younger hens. Do smaller eggs have a harder time hatching? Is there a difference between pullet and hen eggs in regards to hatching? I don't know a lot about incubation. I don't know what an intact air cell means. It's all kind of magic to me, either a hen hatching the eggs or an incubator. The creation and birth is just amazing. I like that an incubator gives me a way to be part of the process.
Turkens are so weird looking they are beautiful. I sure do love birds!

All my eggs wont fit in the Octo, it's kinda small... I really like my Hovabator, the temp and humidity stay solid. Both my incubators have turners which is nice but the Hovabator holds more than twice the Octo. Because my eggs hatch dates are staggered it makes sense to use the hovabator for days 1-18 and when hatching time rolls around put the eggs that are ready into the Octo to hatch. By the time the chicks are out should be time for the next batch to move into the Octo. I think I'll be getting 2 more batches of eggs soon as well so I'll keep doing the same. If I had a small batch of eggs I'd probably do the reverse. Start them in the Octo and hatch in the Hovabator to give them room.

Wasn't even thinking about the amount of eggs you had before I asked that question!! I just know that it get's awfully tight in that eco!! But I love it still!!

I gotta say though. I've been very impressed with my Hovabator 2362n. I got it and a turner for $30 and I wasn't expecting much but that thing holds my temp and humidity rock solid. I have multiple gauges in there to measure with, calibrated... It barely changes.

That's nice of you to hatch eggs for a friend. What kind of eggs are they? I just "won" some eggs off an auction. California Greys, I'm really looking forward to having the white egg and barred combo. I'm going to breed sexlinks. Forget the straight run mystery!

Good luck to your eggs as well! The days slowly tick by...

It's a German line of New Hamps!!

Thats' wonderful that your bator is doing so well!! Other than the aquarium one I made I've only ever used my Brinsea. If I could fine one for pretty cheap I'd buy one!! Some one had a little giant with an auto turner but they wanted $75. If I wanted to get one of them I just as soon go to TSC and spend $25 more and but it brand new!!

Well, he ended up not wining the auction since it went up to $110 which to me is totally crazy!!

I'm going to candle tonight. I have 18 Turkens at 2 weeks and 11 White Leghorn at 1 week. Expecting a dozen California Grey eggs by the end of the week!

I don't have a candler so I use a maglight which works ok, only ok. Last week I saw a few Turkens kicking. Hoping to see some Leghorns kicking today. I'm hesitant to discard eggs as it is entirely likely I just can't see what is going on with my unfortunate candling situation. It isn't the worst to just leave the eggs in even if they aren't developing is it? I've never had an exploder but I don't want one! I'll kick the Turkens out into the OCTO for hatching to make room for the California Greys on Saturday.
Barred. What are the shipped eggs from KY and TX you have? Silkies? How do you like the Sussex? I know very little about them. Seem to be a minor breed around here. I don't think i've ever seen one in person. I hear people talking about them on this board though. Just curious.
Wow! $110 is a lot of money for eggs. I'd be more inclined to get a plane ticket and buy live birds if I wanted them that much.

I was using this kind of candler and it worked pretty good!!

Then I bought this and it's wonderful!!

I won't remove any eggs until at least day 10. As far as I'm concerned if it's clear it has no possibility of forming after so many days of doing nothing. I smell each egg as I take them out and if they made the cut I will leave them in there until it hatches or not!!

The shipped eggs are Blue, Black & Splash Marans. I love the Speckled Sussex!! Here's a couple of pics of my Sussex!!

I agree with you about the eggs!! I would never spend that much on eggs period!!

Well I don't have to much to report, when I candled 2 days ago I still had all 4 of my partridge showgirl eggs developing good but yesterday I had a power outage lasting 5-6 hours making my bator temp drop to the 60s so I'm going to candle tonight & hope they all survived it...I'm definitely keeping my fingers crossed!

Oh & barred babies, your Sussex are gorgeous!! Also ceilo it's good to hear that you have some turkens kicking around, mine are on day 3-4.

Sorry to hear you had a power outage. That's unfortunate. I haven't even thought about that. They actually happen where I live somewhat often though they usually don't last long.

I have all but given up on the Leghorn eggs.

It's day 8 for them and most of them look empty, one looks like something may have happened but failed. I'm leaving that one in because it looks iffy. The rest I just took out. My morbid curiosity wants me to crack them open and look. Which I will do, i'm all but sure they have all not developed at all. I'm a little disappointed but I didn't pay much for them and I think they just had a rough trip. Two were broken and one cracked upon delivery. If that happened they must have been rattled. I'm just going to pick up Leghorn and Gold SexLink chicks from the "local" hatchery in March. Then I can get just females for my main laying flock.

Of the Turkens the majority seem to be doing great. I removed 4 which leaves me with 14 left. The 4 just looked empty. Most of the ones remaining had movement that I could see for sure so I think if all goes well in this last week... that's right, one more week! I should be the proud papa of some freaky looking chicks. I mean freaky looking in the best possible way. I will not deny I think Turkens are weird looking but I think they fall in the category of looking so weird as to be beautiful. I will love each of their little naked necks and heck, I'll knit them little neck cozies if I need to.

I do hope I have good luck with the California Grey eggs I have coming. I really want that breed. If they don't hatch I'm going to have to order some and I'd rather not.

Your Sussex are very pretty. Why do you like them so much? Not that I think they are unlikable. Like I said before, I don't know much about them. Do you keep them because they are pretty? Do they lay well? Do they have good personalities? I've kept several breeds myself over the years and have come in contact with many others as well but not the Sussex. I know next to nothing about them so i'm curious. They are a "dual purpose" correct? Do they get pretty large?
So you like the egg scope? Kinda pricey but if it works well... I may splurge for one someday. I'll save my egg money for one! Do you think it can candle blue eggs?

Tomorrow I'm gonna start up the Octo20 and get it all running smooth for Saturday when the Turkens go on lockdown. Hang in there little Turkens, just one week longer.
Good luck good luck good luck! May everyone's incubators explode with healthy peeping chicks!
