Famous Hatchery 'Pure Bred' Appearances

Here is one of my Rhode Island Whites. He didn't win a champion but did get a Best of Breed though not many people breed Rhode Island Whites.

Not sure what your post is getting at?
I do remember they would pick up the eggs at your location. Buy as many as you had but you had to meet a minimum and they would pay a flat rate of 25 cents an egg.
There were strict regulations and guidelines.

I was referring to hatcheries outsourcing their eggs. I’m sure they do especially if they offer multiple breeds. They can get them anywhere probly cheaper from folks who are not legally set up to wholesale to hatcheries. They skirt around any thing that detracts from their bottom line. It’s all about profit not ethics’s. They do it with puppies, kittens, birds you name it.

Are there known instances of this?, or are we just speculating about this stuff? If there are hatcheries that are known for shady practices should we let others know which ones are doing this?

As I mentioned previously, I've only ever dealt with on hatchery, but with some of the things I read on here, it seems like some of the others must just be horrible outfits to deal with? But then again, no one ever really seems to know these things, it seems more just speculation? Or am I wrong?

Ultimately, I'm glad there are breeders and there are hatcheries, I think they both serve the poultry world in different ways, what I take exception with is unsubstantiated claims, such as 80% of birds being impure, and hatcheries buying eggs from folks that are not set up to legally sell eggs, etc.

If we're going to make these claims, we need to be prepared to site some sources.This goes for negative claims made against breeders or hatcheries. These forums can be a great place to find information.... but we have to be careful or they become a great place to find misinformation also.

With my total cluelessness in mind, and at the risk of asking the proverbial "dumb question," what makes lavender "not blue?"

Genetics is the simplest answer to your question. I believe Self Blue/Lavender is recessive

There is a fellow BYC member that years past worked at Townline hatchery in Zeeland Michigan. I haven't heard from him in a long time. I'm sure several years ago he retired.

I did not or will not call out hatcheries or puppy mills. I was merely talking about how the bottom line is more important to unethical people. There is good and bad in all professions. You could look up chicken hatcheries in violation online or fraud claims or infractions of the BBB. I’m just saying it’s SAD. It was not a personal attack on anyone. It’s not speculation. It’s a reality. I could flip the script and ask why do you love your hatchery? On the Retail end you order was complete you got the breed you ordered your animals were alive the gal on the end of the phone was nice you had no problems with refunds ect. That’s a business transaction. Like I said good and bad in every profession.
Animals paying the price for profit is as old as the word Retail.

I love both the lavender and the blue coloration, but have absolutely no experience with either, beyond my admiration. I raise Nankins - all chestnut with golden hackles and gorgeous green & black tails. If I see anything that even hints at "blue" plumage in my birds, I cringe. Blue (or just plain gray) tail feathers are a really common and hard to overcome fault in Nannies. With my total cluelessness in mind, and at the risk of asking the proverbial "dumb question," what makes lavender "not blue?"

Self Blue/Lavender breeds true but with two blue birds breeding you can have blue, black, and splash chicks.
