There's a difference between shooting at something and shooting something.

I went deer hunting once, but didn't have a shot I could take. I have no problems at all with hunters. Most of them are careful, thoughtful people, just like MGG. The ones who aren't are the ones who drive the stereotypes, unfortunately.

Most of my shooting has been either competitive pistol shooting (Bullseye; one handed at targets) or else training for self defense.
 
The shooting I've done (with guns) is target shooting with rifles. Targets look like this:

The great thing about .22 is you can learn all the techniques for good shooting without getting beat up by recoil. Sight alignment, trigger control, grip, everything is the same. Just quieter and easier to manage.
It's what I learned to shoot on. I was comfortable with it. Then I got to the 20 gauge shotgun for turkey hunting and almost dropped it XD I was not expecting the kick.

Lesson number one: Hold tight. It hurts if you don't. XD
