I kept them in the house until they were like a month old, and we also try not to be gone for more than 2-3 hours.

Yep. I started with heatplate, and glad I did. I'd never heard of heat lamps, but I'm glad. The amount of heat lamp horror stories I've read since joining BYC- *shudder*

I think so. Before the synthetic stuff, they actually originally used horse and pig pancreases and ground them up to extract the insulin for use in humans. I think that you can still find out how to do it, which is neat as all get out. I should look it up.
