Farm chatter

Well they’re livestock guardians not herding dogs hahah they watch them not move them 😜😉
And they are very good at that too LOL. Big snugglers. Nothing more heartwarming than walking out there to see them cuddled up with the sheep. :love
You need a herding breed 😂
Probably LOL. But not looking for another dog right now ;)

The other three are all RSLs. Let's go from smartest to dumbest....
Smartest of the red ones is Poppy. I don't have any good solo pics of her, but in this pic, she's in the back left.....she was molting oddly and looked like she forgot her scarf!! She has the most speckles on her saddle and back feathers. She's the best squatter, but doesn't like to be held. 3rd best layer.

Now for Ruth. Her full name is Ruth Bader Chicksburg. She was named because we thought the white feathers on her neck looked like a lacey collar. She's the one that's accepted her fate to be cuddled cuddliest and the second easiest to pick up. Likes to sit on the little roost I have in their run. Her favorite treat is watermelon. She's the 2nd best layer. She's also very photogenic.

Now for Round Chicken......she's dumb as a box of rocks. She hates being held and while fast, often runs into trees while trying to escape cuddles, which disorients her and makes her easy to grab. She's a bit of a loner- she doesn't stick with the others as much. She often walks past doors trying to go through them. Took her a while to figure out the ramp up to the coop. Her name is Round Chicken because when we first got her, she had no tail, and was therefore very circle shaped. It was originally a nickname because we couldn't think of a real one but it stuck.

I love them! “Round Chicken” is a great name. Like Brooster the Rooster I suppose (though I’m sure she’s much more angelic than he was)

I used to have an SS named Poppy :love I love that name. I’m not so sure how smart mine was though.....

Ruth is adorable to! I love that name. Did you name her before or after RBG’s passing?

I’m going to swipe the chance and brag about my chickens to-even if I have babbled on about them way to much :lau

Here is Joy. You know her life story by now. Indestructible chicken, survivor of countless incidents, and the one with the most personality. She’s like a dog, she runs up to you when she sees you, and stays by your side. Nothing phases her- she pushed past EYP like it was nothing, and predators have no chance- Her sister Daisy killed the hawk that paralyzed her. Determination and Spunk runs in the family I suppose. Joy once tried to fly over the pool- but ended up taking a swim instead. And then of course, she’s stolen my lunch more times than I can count

Jokgu, is one of my BRs- but she’s also know as Jo, or “ s h e
despite CONSTANTLY forgetting where the door to the run is, and clearly having an intelligence level of 4/10, she is a really great “model” (and a really great photo bomber- hence the
s h e pictures) and when she isn’t molting, has a fantastic comb (Not like Tillies though!) and great barring for a hatchery chicken. Though she hasn’t lived through as much, she was one of my 3 surviving BRs, and 4 surviving chickens in total, who used to belong to a flock of 16. (You probably noticed I said “3” BRs, and you”re demanding to know who the 3rd one is. Unfortunately Pebbles died right before I joined BYC from a really strange genetic disorder that showed up in one day)
Heres Jokgu:

Bubbles is a lot like Jokgu, only a little smarter. Bubbles went into her molt earlier though, and I think it was due to the stress of loosing Pebbles/or the stress of Joy disappearing the same day that the pullets where put in their closed-off half of the run. Anyway, Her molt is taking forevevvevevrrrrr and she hasn’t been herself since July or August, but she usually has a super fantastic comb and wattle. She also has great barring, and has an obsession with Scratch and Mealworms (Even more than Jokgu)

She’ll hate me, but this is the only picture I have of her right now :lau

Jellybean and Opal are the EEs. Opal has the best Butt Floof, and JB has the Best Beard. JB is the darker EE and Opal is he light colored one. Jellybean was planned, Opal Was a Surprise (and a blessing when she turned out as a Pullet) but actually is my sweetest pullet. In fact, she has been ever since she was 9 weeks old. She always came up to me in the brooder, and I suspect she will become our second Joy. Jellybean on the other hand, is my first layer, and squats like a flattened potato. It’s very awkward and because it’s so sudden, her legs become super wobbly and she looks VERY awkward.

Valentine & Indigo are my other two pullets. Val is a SLW with the BRIGHTEST RED TAUNTING LITTLE LIAR COMB. She hasn’t laid an egg even if she’s had a Tillie comb since week 18. She’s skittish, but I think that with time she’ll come around to me. She’s always been the littlest chick, but a sweet one. Since they’re summer babies, they only got to go outside a few times a week when they were brooder aged. Valentine was darker colored, and I suspect that as the littlest, the heat was a lot on her. She always played in my shadow or right under my leg so she would be in the shade. Indigo is an LO and the second sweetest. I’ve always wanted an Orpington, so I’m glad I got her. She always comes up to me when I sit at chicken-level in the coop, and never freaks out if I touch her. She was a lot like Opal as a little, and both of them were “the brave ones” who visited me through the wires of their puppy-crate brooder.

Joy reminds me of my SS, Maeby. Maeby's the top hen, gets respect from all my cock/erels, is like 6, and has also gone swimming. She was hanging out with everyone in the pool area, and the dog tried to chase her... she jumped INTO the pool, swam to the other side, got out, and then began to preen XD
The most dignified escape I've ever seen LOL
