Farm chatter

I agree with this whole-heartedly.

I've gone both deer and grouse hunting before. Didn't see any grouse, (probably wouldn't be able to hit one if I did anyway) and sitting in a cold stand all day is not my idea of fun LOL. So I stick with turkey hunting. Not too cold, not that much snow, and a LOT of fun. There's nothing like watching toms strut in. I get goosebumps every time I hear a gobble, and come spring, if it moves... it could possibly be a turkey XD

This last spring I should a double bearded tom. I'll have to get pics. I mounted its tail.
Grouse are amazing. I even shot a Greater Prairie Chicken! I'm gonna get it mounted. Its so cool. No, it's not actually a chicken, lol. We hunt grouse with grouse decoys and a caller (and tape). Sometimes we just sit in a ditch to hunt, since we hunt in minimum maintenance roads, and it's easier than hunting down the landowner for permission. So we find a sunflower field with a lot of grouse feeding in it, watch it for a little while to see where they like to fly over the ditch, and then put the caller next to us in the ditch, set up the decoys in a bush or something in the ditch, and start the caller. If there's a tree in the ditch it's really nice, since they love ti sit in trees. Then, we wait for them to fly over. It's fast paced hunting, and grouse aren't that nervous. Ssometimes if we're just standing in the ditch talking, grouse will suddenly fly over. And their call is the nearest sound. It sounds like chuckling. Which, when you miss and they call, it sounds like they're laughing at you. It's...a bit depressing. Lol! Anyway, that turned out long.
Wow, that's amazing! I would love to see pics of that. Turkeys are awesome.
I’ve never hunted, next year I might be able to hunt some elk, it’s my dream to learn to shoot a gun and be able to hunt!!
You should go for it! Elk hunting would be SO cool. That's a great dream to have. And, it should be somewhat easy to make happen!

How you hunt grouse is a lot different. We hunt on public land on trails and hope to spook some up. Shoot as they fly away.

Yup. I personally prefer sitting up against something, with my knee up so I can rest my arm on my knee.
I like lying down I think better. I think just because I feel hidden better. Though, where we hunt coyotes there's cactus. I don't like touching the ground at all there. I've gotten pricked by way too many cactus. Those things are painful. And stay hidden in your skin forever.

That's interesting. I've heard of it before though. I think ditch hunting is pretty fun. That's how we hunt pheasants too. I've never really walked a big field before. We've walked some ditches, but not much. It's nice when the ditch is thick cover but there's short vegetation beyond it. Then they're forced to fly up.

I am going to get up there as soon (it’s gonna be harder because of COVID) as I can and will definitely let you know what happens.

Interesting... Maybe I'll have to try it! :)
Though... I'd have to find a place where there are grouse first XD
