I thought horses sleep standing up.
Horses do lay down to sleep at times, but a lot of laying down is bad for them. The weight of their own bodies will cause internal problems if they lay down too much, such as a horse that simply can't get up on their own. Sometimes a horse wanting to lay down can be a sign of sickness. But nothing like a good nap in the warm sun!!

You will see horses lay down when the air is brisk and the sun is shining brightly. A healthy horse will lay down with belly facing the sun as the warmth aids in digestion.
