I know, I know, but how many yellow fluffy chicks can you see before you've seen them all??

Okay, on a more serious note, I have a question regarding striping in the hackle and saddle feathers of cockerels. According to Mr. Lamon and Mr. Slocum in The Mating and Breeding of Poultry, (yes, look out, I've been reading again!) "One of the principal color defects which must be guarded against is striping in the hackle and saddle of the male." Is this something that, if you see it early, you're going to see it forever or is this another one of those things that may change/disappear after a molt? If I see this in young birds (and I do see it in a few of my 15 week old cockerels) is this something that should be culled for early on? I have ordered my SOP (just wait 'til I start reading that and see what questions I come up with

) but it won't be here for a while and this has been bugging me since I read it.

Can't answer that one, I haven't seen it....

...ok wait, I assumed you meant like a barring, but are you talking about the vertical black stripe down the center of the hackle feathers? All of mine have that, and it always has gone away...

Yes, that is what I'm talking about - right down the center of the feather. Some of them have it only very faintly and on a couple it is quite dark.

Hmmm..I've never thought that much about it because I've always seen it, and it has always gone away...

Pardon me for intruding here, but would this be the type of barring/stripes your referring to? Just curious as one of my young cockerels has the same thing. I hope you can see it in the pics, they arent the best

Don't panic, a roo changes so much. One minute he is the ugliest thing you have ever seen and the next minute you are saying OMG where did you come from. So don't jump the gun on getting rid of him. He is still very young

Yes, I've spoke w/Peter and Dick who have both stressed to me to let the birds mature before considering culling. Some mature faster, some slower, but I like this little guy because he's so thick and has a nice large-wide head on him

Thanks for the input
