Faverolles Thread

Ok. He is delivering the ones I am getting from his dad this weekend. He lives like 30 min from me. His dad told me to talk to him about who to breed to who. I hope he was able to find someone I may be able to get some Cornish eggs from.

Well, I'm officially out of bantam whites now. The cold did them in. I lost another 4 birds today(not faverolles today). The wind chill was around -25 last night and actual temps was a high of 8 today. The wind blew so bad the other night I have snow in all my buildings including ones that should NEVER get snow in them. There was even 6" of snow in my mail box, and the lid was closed tight.

Sorry to here that David. Its snowing hard now in VT. Cows are more cold hardy then chickens I guess

Keesmom, thanks for the LF eggs! my broody readily took them under her! unfortunately i went out to check her when i got home today and she had pushed a bunch out from under her. one of the eggs i placed from my bantams had broke under her.

i moved her to another nesting box and gave her the cleaned up eggs and she is happy again! here's hoping she doesn't have any more issues. i think she got up from the nest to feed and a few other hens tried to lay their own eggs in the box and broke the egg in the process. moma was pretty clean and the broken egg was almost gone except for some shell.

I have lost several bantam barred rocks as well. I have no more bantam favs left. I have only 5 large whites left and one blue cross and I hope they make it okay. I still have around 250-300 birds left, mostly breeders, but we'll see what winter does. I was able to get rid of about 500 birds this year and several breeds, so hopfully I have room to hatch a lot of large whites and blues out, but we'll see. I already have about 35 chicks out (no favs) and another 100 eggs in the bator, but the faverolles aren't laying for me yet.

I might be able to get you more whites. I'm planning on going to the Crossroad show in October. If my birds survive the winter I'm hoping to have six breeding pens of white bantams or I might be able to ship you some eggs.

We'll I finally ordered the Poultry Press. Can't wait for it to come in. It'll give me some reading through the winter months. Right now it's really cold out and it's going to be like this for at least the next ten days. I have 19 waterers to fill. I use those rubber tubs that I think are great. I flip them over and bang on the bottom with my foot and all the ice comes out. Then I fill them up with water. The sad part is the birds need to drink right away because it will freeze quick. That's the only drink they get all day. I wish I had more time to water them at least twice a day. Last night I worked a 14 hour night. It's suppose to slow down but I haven't seen it yet.

Get back to me in the spring. I need to see what survives the winter. I took a head count of my male white bantams and I thought I had six but I only have 5. That's ok, 5 breeding pens should be enough.
