Faverolles Thread

Pardon me for intruding here, but would this be the type of barring/stripes your referring to? Just curious as one of my young cockerels has the same thing.

Hey GypsyChick! You are certainly not intruding.
The striping that I noticed on my birds is vertical, running down the center of the feather. But actually, the book doesn't describe or illustrate what they are talking about. I assumed it meant a vertical stripe as I would consider a horizontal one to be barring (the book doesn't mention barring). The book goes on to say "Males without any stripe in hackle and saddle give a clear hackle in females, while those which show striping are apt to cause a black ticking in the hackle feathers. Breeders of both sexes should have clean hackles."

Ok, I follow now, sorry. If you look at my little man he has both "barring" and also the stripe down center of a few feathers...so I wasnt quite sure which you were ref. to

On another note, I've considered adding some LF favs to my program in hopes of improving TYPE in my bantams. Any suggestions or advice on doing this? Have any of you done such breedings, and if so, what were your results? Thanks in advance.

but in roos when they are young, they sometimes have them and after the 1st molt they might go away. Again, roos goes thru so many changes it is unbelievable. Nice wide head is really good.

Don't panic, a roo changes so much. One minute he is the ugliest thing you have ever seen and the next minute you are saying OMG where did you come from. So don't jump the gun on getting rid of him. He is still very young

Thanks Leisha! I'm not going to panic

, just wanted to hear comments from you and others who have seen lots more Faverolles than I have. I am really trying to NOT look at my young birds much since they do change so much (seems like daily sometimes). I have a 29 week old cockerel that I had in my mind to send to freezer camp until just a week or so ago. I hadn't really looked at him closely in a while and actually went out to the coop to get him and "dispatch" him one morning, but after looking him over, he looked so much better than I remembered that I stuck him back in the coop to grow some more!

Yes, I've spoke w/Peter and Dick who have both stressed to me to let the birds mature before considering culling. Some mature faster, some slower, but I like this little guy because he's so thick and has a nice large-wide head on him

Thanks for the input

Peter, you are too funny. In the spring and summertime, I have a big grassy area that all of my roos run around together (along with my Jersey giant hen), she is mother hen. I just stand at the fence or sit on the roosting post and watch them.

I already have about 10 of them to go out when the weather cooperates

Oh come on Peter, you've got to have that magical black ball repaired!

I'm sure you get so tired of us less experienced Fav owners trying to hurry things along. I'm trying to listen to you and just relax and let them grow. The more I read and learn though, the more questions I have! Its just like that saying that goes "the more I learn the less I know".
tongue.png
One thing I have learned though, no matter how many faults they have, it doesn't affect the way they taste!
