I've used the same packing method with good luck, though I use crinkled up newspaper instead of shredded paper. We don't have a shredder. I haven't had a cracked egg yet but I haven't sent out more than ten or so batches of eggs.

I'm a little late on this, but I'll respond anyway. In my search for any stock I found that most breeders did not want to ship chicks or started birds. Most would only send eggs. Leisha, David and Ron Patterson were the only ones I found who were willing to send live birds. It does get expensive too. The shipping on Ron's trio was three times the cost of the trio itself.
Ouch! I just noticed my #2 Fav Cockerel is missing a toenail on the 5th (outer) toe on each foot. He was broody hatched, so not inspected carefully at hatch, but I'm shocked I didn't see it til today. He is one of the tree dwellers, so it's remotely possible the cold did it. It's perfectly symmetrical so I'm suspecting genetics. :\\
I wish we could search within a thread... I think toenails have been mentioned here but can't find it.
I still have his dad... soup pot for this one? He's got the nicest dark chest & beard too, darnit.

I probably wouldn't use him, I guess unless I really needed beard color, you gotta just weigh the benefits with the risks, like with any other fault / DQ. It's too bad you didn't notice it sooner so you could've culled him before he got really nice otherwise...
This is just not my month for my faverolles! Now a raccoon is picking off my birds. I've been trying to trap him, but he's too big for a squirrel trap. I'm trying to catch him with a dog-sized trap now. He's taken some of my nicest cockerels. ):
I'm going to need some cockerels to replace the ones lost in my flock though. Especially since my first salmon rooster is now gone as well, from age, and I've got nothing else but my recessive white and a salmon cockerel to work with this spring. If anybody has any nice-looking roos for sale this spring, can somebody give me the heads up? I've got some great hens, but no older boys and no proven ones now. ):
