Nice babies heritagehabitatfarms! I'll have to post some pics of my more, umm, interesting juveniles. Waiting on this awful heat to go away - one more day of it they say. It was 103 again today! I found one of my mahogany project hens dead in the nest box this afternoon in spite of fans in the coops and ice blocks in the waterers.

*The Chicken on the Hill, is doing a Mahogany Project, i have a trio from Sandhill but am holding off on hatching the next generation till fall. A friend of Jeanine in Central ORegon has a project going and i think Liesha may???? have some going. The males are beautiful with lots of red color.....the girls are a medium red,beige brown with white beards. I think there is a pair pictured on the feather site favarolle page. Sandhill Preservation breeds them but they are not always available.... eliz

that is sad... where is a good place to get the mahogany's from??? i have been thinking of ordering from one of the hatchery's that have them pop up in there lines and working them up from there...

I have come to the conclusion the Faverolle breed has a problem with split wings. This includes LF and bantams. I have probably opened up a can of worms, but this subject needs to be addressed. So I pose this question - has anyone actually managed to breed this out of their lines?

I didn't see it at all in the bantams I had (BBS). I've had some LF juveniles look like they may have a split wing but did not when they molted into adult plumage. Haven't seen a case this year yet though I still have some really young ones.

I have a bunch of Mahoganies... around 15 or so now. Mine are also from Sand Hill, but I have crossed the Boulanger birds I have into them to improve type. This is my first year with them. The original birds were a reverse trio I got from Ragdollcatlady in California... poor things took almost 5 days to finally get here, but they were fine. The youngsters I have growing out from the crossing of the lines look good. I also have some from Thechickenonthehill I hatched out from eggs she was kind enough to share. I like them, they are much darker than the ones from California and seem to have more of the Fav pattern then the Sand Hill birds... I like them, and will probably use them in several different breedings next year.

It's not a "Faverolles problem" it's a problem for every soft feathered breed. It's something that has to be continually watched for in any / all soft feathered birds.

Hello thread! Would you guys mind looking at these pictures and letting me know what you think?







The question is do I keep them or get rid of them and start over? I purchased eggs thinking I was getting non-hatchery birds eggs. I saw the picture of the persons rooster and he actually looked really good. She had 5 hens and all of them looked good but one was a little darker salmon than I would like to have. There were a few dark feathers in the tails but I thought the birds looked good. I am not sure what I have will turn into what she had.... Will the cockerels loose the dark striping in the neck feather? Her rooster did not have dark stripes in the neck, as I said he looked really good. I would appreciate some input and please do not be afraid to let me know what you think as I do not want to waste time on these guys if it is a lost cause but I do plan on working with any breed I get--I do not want just eggs layers.

I should mention that I have just 3 cockerels and 3 pullets to work with here.

I should also mention that the leg feathering is actually pretty good on all these birds but I had them in with some other chicks for a while and they were pretty rough on the cockerels leg feathers.
