Favorite Author?????????????

If you like big, thick, books with powerful, moving stories try Bryce Courtenay. He wrote "Tandia" and "The Power of One".

My family teases me by saying that I am the female version of the character on the "Time Enough At Last" episode of the Twilight Zone. The character, played by Burgess Meredith, isn't allowed to read at home by his domineering wife, nor can he read at work. After a nuclear holocaust, he finally has all the time in the world to read...until he breaks his glasses!

I mostly read mysteries but there are a few exceptions. Some of my favorite authors are:

Margaret Mitchell
Patricia Cornwell
Kathy Reichs
Jane Austen
Janet Evanovich (can't read these in public...I look foolish laughing to myself!)
Carl Hiaassen (ditto!)
Anne George
Sue Grafton
James Patterson
Walter Mosely
Carolyn Hart
Parnell Hall
Sandra Brown
Nora Roberts (aka J.D. Robb)
Diane Mott Davidson

We all read in my family, and have often discussed this episode as one of the worst curses a reader could experience.
I actually cried the first time I saw that episode, and didn't watch Twilight Zone for a long time after that. I was younger and more sensitive then

I don't know if I'm supposed to mention non chicken websites here, but for all of the readers in this group, I have to tell you about http://www.paperbackswap.com/index.php
It
is a free book swaping site. If you have a bunch of books sitting around that you have all ready read, just post them on PBS. People can look at your bookshelf and request books from you. You then send the book to them media mail. You do pay the postage, but then you can request any book on the site that you want, not just from the person that requested one from you, and they pay to mail the book to you. There is no minimum number of books to order, it is free to join. If you post 10 books they give you 2 credits free and you can order two books right away. The books you post still belong to you unless someone orders one from you. It is really simple, I am really bad at explaining things on the computer! You can post as many books as you want to get rid of. There is one lady on there with 6000 books!
There is over two million books to choose from, thousands of members all over the US.
And it isn't just paperbacks. Hardcover, childrens, cook books, gardening, home school, text books, you name it! There is also a forum like this one, but for books.
So anyhow, I love it. I have mailed 50+ books and have gotten more than that in return.
If you love to read, just check it out.

DH watches TV I read, Kay Hooper, Christina Skye, Allison Brennon, Iris johanison,Nora roberts(J.D.Robb) Sorry I don't like Danielle Steel. Steven King , Dean Koonz, theLittle Harlequins romances, I really like a good who done it, Just don't like explicix sex, or explicix language, I feel that a good author can give a good story without fowl(spelling?) language or sex scenes. Have belonged to a book club for years, and if I don't like the book it goes to local library. since i can read a book in a couple days, and the libraries in the small towns around here love me.

I want to add, that if you do join Paperbackswap and go to the discussion forums, you will find more authors than you ever knew about, your To Be Read pile or TBR will grow by leaps and bounds. It is very addicting!
Hmmm, sound familliar? I just joined BYC, and now if I'm not on PBS, I'm here.

Me and my DH read almost exclusively non-fiction b/c we have found a good writer of this genre is as enjoyable, if not more, than fiction...plus you take away factual data that you can add to your knowledge.
Anyway, some of our more favored authors (certainly not an exhaustive list )are:
Bill Bryson
Bernd Heinrich
David Quammmen
Peter Mayle
Simon Winchester
Scott Wiedensaul

Sundance, it sounds like you are a Cozy Mystery fan.
Have you read any Joanne Fluke, Tamar Myers, Claudia Bishop, Kathy Hogan Trocheck? They all write mysteries that have little or no swearing, sex or gore. A few even have recipes.
The cozy mystery author list could fill a page, but those are a few.
