Favorite duck breed and why?

A trio of Muscovys works great for me. They hatch more than I need so I have plenty to sell. The drake only mates them a time or two a week that I see anyhow. And they are never torn up from over mating. In fact the only evidence that he is mating "aside from fertile eggs and ducklings lol" is his dirty foot prints on their backs. No missing or torn up feathers. With no competition for breeding rights he doesn't feel the need to mate them every ten minutes. As soon as they hatch I take them away and with in a week or two they are setting again. These two girls hatched 66 duckling "set three times" in 2016. I've had some hatches, of a single hen, over 20 in one setting before as well.
Wow! So then the ducklings go to a new owner?

Calls. Besides their obvious adorable appearance. They are inquisitive, friendly, and small. Their small size makes them proportionally less messy than their larger cousins in my experience. None of mine weigh over 1.5 lbs. They are very vocal, hence the name, so depending on the proximity to neighbors that could be a downfall. They are by FAR my most favorite fowl on the farm. :loveView attachment 1263230 View attachment 1263231 View attachment 1263233 View attachment 1263234 View attachment 1263241
Oh what sweet ducks! My neighbors aren't that close so no worries there.

:love:loveOmg they are ADORABLE!!!!

I take them and raise them. Butcher what I want for my own freezer and friends freezers and sell the rest. In a light year they'll still hatch over 30. Even with just a good trio of Muscovys you can get over run with ducklings pretty easy.
That's good info to know. Thanks!

I just saw where you were interested in eggs. I haven't gotten my first egg yet. Soon I hope. I'll be hatching what I do get. I don't think they are known for their impressive laying but their eggs aren't as small as you might expect. I bought some hatching eggs online and they were comparable to an average chicken egg. Not at all as small as a bantam chicken would be.

I don't have to get a lot of eggs, I will still have chickens. I just don't think I am capable of eating my own animals - unless I get overrun with them and need to. ;) But, even then I might have to find someone else to process for me.

Same here. I can dispatch one that is suffering to be humane. But something about knowing it before it becomes food I can't handle. And no matter what it is if I have to dress it I don't have the stomach to eat it. My husband says I am a defective country girl. Luckily my tiny ducks aren't in much danger of being food. They are too tiny lol
