Hello, I have a baby fawn buck that was rescued when his mother was hit by a car. Today his stools are bloody and runny. I know that deer are much like goats. I have pygmy goats as most of you know but I have never had to deal with bloody stool. Can anyone please give me some advice on what to do.

He has been on replacer for 4 days now.
He is around 2 weeks of age I am guessing.
His stool looks like blood mixed with slime (puke).

I have not wormed him yet or anything. I have heard that I should use strongid as a wormer but not until 6 weeks of age.

First of all, I would throw out the replacer. Many babies simply can't digest the stuff. My mother once raised an orphaned baby fawn on canned milk reduced half and half with water. You might try this formula. It works really well for baby goats. Take a gallon jug of whole milk from the store. Pour off about a quart. Add a can of evaporated milk and a cup of buttermilk to the jug. Shake to mix well. Then fill the jug back up with some of the milk you poured off. For the loose stool, give some kaopectate. Make sure the baby does not get dehydrated. Give Pediolyte if nothing else.

I'd probably find a local goat farm and buy some milk for it. Milk replacer is just bad stuff. he's not over eating it is he?

I dont know what to say about the blood in his stool. But I have a feeling its probably the replacer. Is it save-a-kid?

NONE of your goats are milking right now? *sigh* how inconvenient!

Good luck. Someone ought to know something.

As stated above, I'd switch him slowly to whole milk. Is his poop foul smelling? Different then normal poop smelling

I can't offer any help but my encouragement and hope that he's ok.

I would suggest you call your local Wildlife Agency or rehab center and get their help. Not many people know how to care for wild animals unless they have personal experience... they are often much trickier than farm animals.

Goat guts and deer guts are fairly similar, aren't they? I am no expert but maybe some goat probio's. Maybe place a wanted ad for fresh goat milk?

I know you are trying your hardest to keep the little guy safe and healthy. Good luck with your little baby.

I have read so much about just using whole milk, and I have NEVER raised a pygmy on replacer so I should have just went with my gut instinct. No none of my does are in milk (grr) but I am going to switch slowly to whole milk and I am going to also get some probios and 100% pumpkin for the runny, bloody stool.

Oh my goodness, that is the cutest thing I've ever seen!!!! How did you find it? If he is hand raised, will he be friendly? Or can you eventually release them?

DITTO THAT! We have a few wildlife re-habbers on BYC, so hopefully one responds soon! I specialized in squirrels and birds, not fawns, but I'd think goat milk would be more logical than any cow's milk formula. Good luck!
