We have six 15 month hold hens, four RI Reds and two Light Brahmas. About eight days ago, we had to put one of the light brahmas in a dog kennel because of all the abuse she was taking, mostly from the Reds. My question is, how long does she need to stay in there for? Thank you.

Welcome to BYC!

What are you planning to accomplish by having her in there?
Are you wanting to keep her in there until she heals?

She may be picked on still once you return her, if not be picked on more.

You might want to "ground" the picker instead.

Hello, unfortunately, when you take a hen out of the group due to pecking, what happens is, that hen becomes the newbie, so when she gets back with the flock, the pecking starts right away again. If you can put the bullies in the dog kennel, and let her back in with the group asap, that might make things better for her. A couple things to consider.....is your coop and run large enough? Is there plenty of room for her to stay away from those bullies? Are there things in the coop/run to keep the chickens busy, giving them something to peck at that isn't another chicken? Flock block? You can hang a head of cabbage in there and they'll just peck the heck out of it? You could even throw down a pile of dirt from the garden or a pile of raked leaves for them to scratch around in...

I've never had them but, have heard countless times on here, that RIR are an aggressive breed. If more than one RIR is tormenting your Brahma, get "pinless peepers," for them. If prevents the bird from seeing straight ahead so their aim is off. They are probably mad enough wearing them to forget about your Brahma.

Please put "pinless peepers," in the search box so you can see what they are, etc.
