FEB HATCH-ALONG THREAD ...COME JOIN US.... EVERYONE!

With the store eggs - I couldn't figure out the date on the carton as to when they were packed, but they were a sell by March 1st (I think). Oh well, it was worth a try! Now for some fresh eggs from a local BYC'er. I am just hatching the eggs for her because I can't REALLY keep any more chickens, but she understands the need to hatch!! Good luck to everyone's upcoming hatches!

except now my humidity is at 28* and will rise today with the addition of a second water holder and my temp is 102*. :) now i just need my eggs!!

eta!!! my first bunch of eggs are HERE!!! my post office just called!!! YAY!!!!!!!! Now to not put them in yet! lol!!

Bad news on the broody showgirl/maran hatch too. Yesterday, mama got out and got back on the wrong eggs. I don't know how long she was off, but it must have been a while. It was warm when the sun was up (tho not hot enough) but we found her after dark when we were locking up the coop and by then it was pretty chilly. We should be on day 14 tomorrow so I guess I'll candle then and see if we have any still viable. Boo, hiss.

Anyone have a similar experience with a happy ending? I coudl use some encouragement.

This is how to read the date on an egg carton. They use the Julian calender: Jan. 1 = 001, Jan 2 = 002, etc.

I did find that picture, but by the numbers on the carton, it was 366! Which I guess means the last day of December, since it was a leap year last year. I thought maybe it was a typo, but other egg cartons from around the same time had the same number.

And the sad thing is that was the pack date. When were they actually laid?

Well, this was a really dissappointing hatch for me. Out of 36 eggs, 21 made it to lockdown, but that was kind of expected. It was a fertility test hatch for a group of them... Only had 3 that started eveloping and quit before lockdown. This weekend was really crazy for us. My DD smashed her finger in a door, so between ER visits and surgery Monday, we were gone a bit. 2 spitzhauben crosses hatched Sunday evening, then 2 more early Monday morning. I was gone ALL day Monday with my daughter, and 4 more had hatched by the time we got back. One more was pipped and trying to zip. The 8 chicks were raising havoc in the bator, so I added some water to the sponges, then as quickly as I could, I took the chicks out. This morning, the zipped chick hadn't made any progress, but was still alive and strong. I assisted the hatch, and she seems strong and healthy. No more eggs had even pipped, so I did a quick candle and only had weak movement in 1 egg...

I took that egg into the bathroom and steamed it up good in there and made a little hole. Everything looked good, except she hadn't even internally pipped, and all of the vessels were resorbed from the membrane. I made a little pip for her and wrapped the egg in a wet paper towel and put her back. I did the same for the rest of the eggs, and 2 had not developed past lockdown, but many were fully developed, just never internally pipped and dead...

Of the 12 eggs I checked this morning, only 3 were still barely alive. I assited them as much as I dared, wrapped them in wet paper towel and put them back in the bator. I don't think any of them are going to make it. I had to leave to bring the kids to school and go to work, so they are on their own. Whatever I find when I get home is what will be... I was really looking forward to the silkie crosses... They would have been my first silkies. It looks like the one that was still clinging to life is a Showgirl...

All 9 live chicks are Spitzhauben crosses, so they should be fun to watch as they grow...

Set 7 EE in my new Genesis bator this morning. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment.
