February 2022 Hatch-A-Long

Pics
Okie doke, so out of 14 eggs, 11 are still in the race to hatch. I pulled 2 of the 3 Welsummer eggs, one had a blood ring, the other I didn't see any development on, and there seemed to be a weird smell to it... better safe then sorry. Another egg seemed clear. But, hey, praise the Lord for 11 seemingly good eggs!

Although this one kinda threw me for a loop, pretty sure I saw a baby, but the whole separation from the rest of the egg was strange (the eggs have been incubating for 6 days as of this evening)

I responded in the other thread, I'm sorry I wasn't getting notifications yesterday.

It doesn't look promising, when you see blood vessels receding like that it's usually breaking down BUT anytime I'm unsure I mark the egg with a "?" and put it back in the bator to check in a few days. As long as it isn't stinky or weeping there is no harm in waiting.

Can anyone help me please? I've got 2 little chicks in the brooder separated from the other 4. These 2 just came from the incubator. One chick seems to be doing okay, a bit weak but not too bad. The other one is struggling to stand and is very weak. He's had a bit of water not sure on food. How do you help weak chicks?

How long has it been since it hatched? Do they have an area to get away from the heat on both sides of the separated brooder? Remember that it's just as important that they can get away from the heat as needed as it is to keep them warm. I usually give vitamins when I have a weak chick but depending on how weak it is you need to be very careful when administering because chickens, in general, can aspirate easily.

It's been 2 days since he hatched. I've been up half the night getting honey water and yolk into him. He hasn't eaten anything but after an hour of dipping his beak into each mixture every few minutes (just holding him near it and he'll get some with a bit of a head tilt from my end but not enough I'm force feeding him heaps) he was looking really good last night. He was chirping away and almost managing to stand. A bit weaker again this morning as it's been 3 hours since last feed. I'll be dropping it down to every 2 hours until he gets better.

Started to answer your first post but then I saw you had already gotten some responses. Sounds like you are doing everything you can for this one. That’s all you can do. You can also try posting in the emergencies thread for more responses. Good luck with this little one.:hugs

Thank you. At 2.30 this morning I put my little chick into the bottom of my shirt which I curled up (can't really explain too well sorry) to keep him warm between dipping his beak into the honey water and yolk. As soon as I put him in he struggled forward and rested his head upon my hand. Next thing I knew he was gone. I wish I hadn't left him for the 3 hours last night because he was looking to improve when I put him back out. He was chirping away and even trying to stand.

Yes, I did post a thread in the emergency thread but got no help on what to do.

So sorry you lost your little one.:hugs And I’m also sorry nobody responded on the emergencies thread. I truly sympathize with you and your loss. I have been through this many times and it is always heartbreaking.❤️
You should not feel guilty about leaving this one. It sounds like it was already weak and you gave it the best fighting chance you could.
