February 2022 Hatch-A-Long

Help please, this one has the membrane stuck to it and she'll pieces stuck. Can I take it out to wipe with a wet warm cloth? The other hatched chick is eating the shell pieces off it

That's just egg waste behind the chick. It should all fall off shortly, both the egg waste and the membrane on the chicks back, but if it doesn't, I wouldn't allow the membrane to dry on because it's hard to get off in those circumstances but most of the time they walk it right off.

I'll clarify a little better, even if the membrane dries to the chick, it too will eventually fall off after a few days in the brooder. The only time it's a concern is it it's wrapped oddly around the chick in a way that could restrict movement. So even in cases where it does dry on its usually fine but you should be able to see if it's stuck to the wing and back for example.

I'm multitasking while I make dinner and I apparently shouldn't try to answer questions while I cook. 😅 I'm sorry.

No worries! I appreciate the help 😊

This is on outside of crate where brooder is setup...I hadn't moved chicks yet as they r still little damp.
2nd pic is of whole setup with both brooder plate and heat lamp.
I just checked new thermostat n it says it's 78 underneath center of brooder plate.
A brooder needs to be draft free. So you'll need to put some cardboard or something around the sides to stop airflow chilling them.

It has cardboard around the sides a few inches as well as a doubled drop cloth over the whole crate to help block any drafts.
I've still got them inside for now though as I was afraid it was too cold on them.
Tomorrow is supposed to be 60s so hopefully it will be better!
