February 2022 Hatch-A-Long

Pics
Lots going on here! And excited for this upcoming hatch next Friday!
Candled this morning and all 4 of my first ever silkies are doing well! Active and very alert! Praying I get a beauty of a blue to remember those first three babies from!
Then candles 2nd set from Hawaii @LadiesAndJane thank you!!! Not looking bad for shipment halfway around the world! We shall see...I'll take another peek to check on them next week and see if aircells have improved.

My eggs went into lock down late last night. Two look good; I think the third has quit. Argh. This is my third dismal hatch rate in a row, using an incubator/technique that was averaging 90+% hatch rates for me until this year. I'm wondering if the lifespan of the Janoel 12s is just not this long? Maybe this is a good excuse for me to upgrade to a larger incubator next year... ;)

Got some babies!!!! The second one I had to help out, it was stuck in that wrong end for quite a while. I had a feeling that one would give me trouble. It was kind of a weirdly shaped egg and it had an abnormally small air sac compared to the others, even running with 30% humidity.

Received my Araucana and Speckled Sussex today. My postie made a special Saturday delivery and even was asking if the last lot he delivered was all good and none cracked <3 He's a gem. Unfortunately, everything ships by Aramex takes forever! I've got some eggs I'm waiting on sent 2.5 hours away on a Wednesday, should have been here overnight, it's now day 3 and they're still got here! And my Araucana/Speckled Sussex eggs were shipped out Tuesday from the South Island, so took four days. NZ Post usually is overnight from the same island, and max 3 days from the South. I likely won't really be ordering shipped eggs now unless my Araucanas don't turn out, but in future I'm going to say please don't use Aramex. At least I know as soon as the parcels hit locally, my postie guy brings them out to me, which is generally unheard of in rural post community <3

Starred with 10 eggs, 4 hatched with no problem. 1 died after pipping, 1 never pipped. The last 4 went weird and I don't know why. Woke up to 3 out of their shell but with a lot of gunk on them. They were fine but tired and seem to be doing alright now. The last egg though... The chick hatched but still had unabsorbed yolk. I've never had this happen and can't figure out why. The humidity was high when I woke up, maybe from so many hatching at the same time? I don't know.

I put the little one with the yolk in a small container in the incubator. That was yesterday and so far I'm not seeing much difference. It is still alive and will chirp and move a little if I turn the light on to look in, but mostly seems to be sleeping. Fingers crossed, but I'm not sure if it will survive. 😩

But out of 10 eggs I have 7 healthy chicks. Not the worst hatch I've had, but definitely the strangest.

“Lockdown” today, which for me just means I stopped turning the eggs, here DAY 17. All 16 looking good. Took out the turner, put in the non-skid shelf liner. Set the eggs large side air cell upward.I don’t actually add water until DAY 19 or if I see an internal PIP.😊
These chicks look identical at hatch so I’ll put a cage around the Polkie eggs before they do.
