February 2022 Hatch-A-Long

Pics
This is on outside of crate where brooder is setup...I hadn't moved chicks yet as they r still little damp.
2nd pic is of whole setup with both brooder plate and heat lamp.
I just checked new thermostat n it says it's 78 underneath center of brooder plate.

What does the temp show if you hold the thermometer directly against the plate for a few minutes? Radiant heat will show much lower a few inches below.
I taped it to the underside of brooder plate so I'll give it some time to adjust n see.
It was 78 just when I moved it from underneath on bottom to tape it to the brooder plate.

After being taped underneath the brooder plate a while it says it is 96 in the center.
Is this high enough or should I keep them in the house?
They finally both went to sleep once all lights were off so I think I'll leave them in incubator for tonight.

95 is what the recommended temp for new chicks is. I would keep the plate very low so they can rest their backs on it, and keep an eye on them. Plates should only be used in 50F or higher so be careful if you expect lower temps.

Day 14 candling report:

8/12 in incubator at end of day 7 candling.

3 Isbars- still going strong, not much retraction on their air sacs. Only a few millimeters on one side. Blood vessels only visible right next to air sac, green eggs are hard to candle.

2 Hedamoras- still going strong, air sacs have retracted to expected level, both having a dance party.

2 Swedish Flowers- still going strong, air sacs have retracted to expected level, visibly motion in both.

1 55 Flowery- goodbye little buddy. Egg-mortem showed it quit on day 8. 0/4 of this breed made it, 3 clears and 1 quitter.

So, my shipped egg/first time hatch is clucking along with 7/12 remaining.

Where did your eggs come from?
