February 2022 Hatch-A-Long

Update on my chuckles. I built them a brooder box and they moved into that at 1.5 weeks. We’ve had some freezing weather but they’ve survived well. They have a brooder plate and wind block. And they have just started spending daytime outside in nature on the ground. 🥰

My little chicks have been spending our hot days outside now. I can't recall if I said, but I bought another 9, so 19 in total, including Solo, my "big" girl.

I have been swapping out my mixed Silkie's eggs for the purebred Silkie eggs and fake eggs when there were no Silkie eggs, as she's a lot bigger, and can go up into the high nesting boxes, so no one can bother her, hoping she'd go broody. Well, looks like we've got a broody girl, she's been sitting on it since last night and I tucked another egg under her just now and she was growling and complaining at me. I can't recall how many were underneath her. I think there's only about five? But between those and the ones in my incubator currently, I'm looking forward to seeing what we get. We were told she's an awesome mum when we bought her, they used her for hatching ducks and the likes as well, so fingers crossed! I guess I need to remove the fake eggs under her at some point when she's out and about. She's usually quite skittish, so I don't want to disturb her too much.

So far 5 have hatched! I added some a few days later on. Those ones should have hatched by the end of the day today. How long after 'hatch day' do you wait to call it quits on unhatched eggs?
I give it 72 hours (3 days) after hatch day to pip but if it pips I go by feel for that particular egg. Unless it’s a staggered hatch situation though, after 72 hours I remove all unpipped eggs.
