I just went into lockdown with my own eggs (well my chickens anyway) for the first time. 19 eggs, JG's, americana/sizzles, silkies, and mutts.

I'm so excited.

also have a batch going into lockdown on the 11th.

Congrats Texasgal! Looks like they are worn out from the ordeal of hatching!

Are these the Wheaten marans? I have a few I'm not sure what to call! LOL They were hatched from Blue Maran eggs, but they are yellow with grey spots coming in. They were yellow since hatch. Every picture I see of blue maran chicks, the chicks are gray.

Me too Murano .. I've got a couple chicks from what was supposed to be blue/splash marans that I'm not quite sure about .. I'm hoping the mostly yellow one is a splash .. but the striped one ...

(I think there was a Wellie egg in there ..)

No they are not Wheaton Marans. At least they are not supposed to be but neither was the Buff Orp sold to me a s BLRW, but I digress. I bought these directly from Julie Gabbard's site where you pick what eggs and how many you want in increments of 1, 3, 6, 12, etc. I chose 3 Black Copper Marans, 3 Golden Copper Marans, and 3 Blue-Egg-Laying Ameraucanas. Apparently the Ameraucanas didn't cooperate so I had the option of canceling or adding more of the Marans so I just changed my order to eliminate the Ameraucanas and add more Marans. Six were marked BCM and 6 were marked GCM when I got them. I am down to 7 total and not really sure they are all developed due to difficulty candling. So the simple answer is NO, THEY BETTER NOT BE WHEATONS! I can't help with your dilemma as I am grossly uneducated regarding Marans. I was sold two adult hens last years purported to be Black Copper Marans and only recently did I realize they are Cuckoo Marans! I was staying out of the politics of Marans and just wanted dark brown eggs. These are much more mahogany red than the eggs laid by my Cuckoo.

Well see what color chicks I get! Good luck to you.

I'm joining in -- what a great thread!

This is my day 8. I must admit, that I've candled at least one egg every day. My whole family is excited. The kids were so amazed (as I was) to see their little hearts beating on day three! Yesterday, we could clearly see the eyes and the little darlings are moving all around. Woo-hoo!

I have one day-three-quitter, so I have 15 eggs from "okiehen" that are blue Andalusians, and a test group (20 eggs) from my own flock that are all Easter Eggers in pink, brown, and green shells.

well I don't think the other eggs are going to hatch. so this batch is 50% hatchrate. Much Better than the January hatch. When I candled the set due on Feb 16th it looks like I may not have gotten fertile eggs, most looked clear. It might have been too weak a light but I don't think so. I will recandle on the 5th, and ...clears will get tossed at that time. -2 in Nenana this morning. Burrrrrr!

well I was alittle worrried about going to bed and leaving water in the brooder (one chick looked a little weak) I was afraid I would find the smallest one drowned......but when I got up here is what I found.

The Buff Orp hatched at 1:15 this am and I ended up having to help him out. He was 3/4 zipped and it seems he couldn't finish zipping because the membrane stuck to it. I helped it finish zipping and left it until this morning. When I checked on it when I got up it was still stuck in the bottom half of the shell with the membrane stuck to it. It couldn't get out so I helped it. It's yolk was all absorbed. I checked on the Silkie egg that had pipped last night and it was the same. Not ten minutes later I heard a ruckus in the incubator and when I checked the Silkie had hatched also so both eggs set 1/14 hatched and there are still 3 set 1/15 in there. No pips on them yet.
Congrats everyone on the new hatches. I love the pictures of them.
edited because I can't spell today.
