Well I'm starting a little late but still should have a feb hatch if all goes well. First time trying my new homemade incubator after a month of testing. Still not quite where I want it to be but I'm getting impatient. Starting 10 Buff Orpington eggs today at 3pm (EST). It's a test for them as well as my hens just started laying a month ago and I need to see if the roos are doing their job. Only 9 in the pic, the last one's going in this evening due to a slowpoke hen.
I'm joining the hatch wagon... This will be my 1st hatch with a bator, went through 2 hatches with broodies this past fall. So I just put 36 of my own eggs in the bator. 4 bantam mixes, 4 Easter Egg/bantam mixes, 25 Buff Orpington, 2 RIR/BO mixes and 1 I'm not sure about... we will see
So they should start hatching around the 27th!
When do you 1st candle you eggs? Do you candle them all or just a few?
I am joining in! Just set in the incubator this morning, 5 BLRW, 5 Welsummer, 3 Barnvelder eggs from BYC member JamesA, as well as 4 of our own bantam eggs, from our single white cochin bantam hen. We think that our black cochin roo will be the daddy, but we have several other bantam roo daddy possibility's, so it will be fun to see what happens, but secretly hoping for some pure cochin babies! Hatch day should be Saturday Feb 27th!
I just put -23--- 6 Cm, 6 EE, 11 Mutts in (pos crosses -Hens- SLW, GLW, BLK. STAR, PARTRIDGE ROCK, BLK. JG, SB ORP. /ROOS-- CM, PARTRIDGE COCHIN)
This will be my second hatch. More for learning then anything. Mutts will be sold to the family next door. Unless there is one or two the hubby, and son really like. Any the family does not buy I will take to TRS sale in April. The Cm I will keep most of the pullets. Might sale a set or 2 of pairs if I get them. Same with EE's.
I want to get some more rare eggs, but I need to work out the bugs. Be it my mess ups or problems with bator. Before I put the $ into them. Had 5/15 hatch in Jan. Hoping for more this time.
Good Luck & Best Wishes to all the hatches in Feb.
Just found out that a local free range organic farm wants more egg chickens and will barter with me, dual purpose mutt pullets for meat and milk! So guess more kids are going into the bator... Kandy takes really good care of their livestock. I'd love to supply her some hens for her egg production. I love the old school of bartering.
I guess I am joining the party, I have 13 eggs in my cardboard box incubator that are due to hatch on Feb.8th. This is a first time thing, I started with 18 eggs from my own hens, I candled them at 12 days and there was one cracked shell and 4 that were not fertile. The blue eggs are hard to see anything but I could see the faint outline of the air bubble so I kept them in there. Temps. have stayed between 96º and 102º with humidity at 50% most of the time. The humidity has gone up since lockdown started but will be fairly easy to control, if necessary. Wish me luck.
