Momma hen broke 2 silkie eggs this morning-both were rotten though so its semi-ok. I just hope the 3 remaining silkie eggs aren't rotten as well. one ameraucana has a few miniscule cracks in it, but nothing that looks like a pip. I'll just wait for day 21, tomorrow, to check again. I'm excited....

Technically day 18 and lock down does not suppose to start until 5:30 this evening but when I went to turn the eggs I can already hear a chick and already have a pip. Since I already have a pip I am going into lock down NOW. I hope I didn't confuse any of the chicks in the eggs I did turn. Which was almost all of them. I can still here chirping tho. It is kind of hard to see in the pic. Will they be alright?

I have to say I am happy with my first foray into hatching eggs. I rigged up a small cardboard box incubator and collected 18 eggs from my hens. Of the 18, 13 turned out to be fertile and I ended up with 10 healthy chicks out of that 13 eggs. I am on day 7 of the next batch, have 25 eggs in there this time, will report back after day 10 when they have been candled. This is fun...

Since I am new at this and most of the posters here seem to have alot of experience, I have a couple questions. Of the 10 chickies hatched, 2 are from the blue eggs. My rooster is a RIR, the blue eggs come from my Aracauna hens, are these chicks just mutt chicks or do they have a name/category.

The same question for the brown eggs, the hens are buff orpingtons crossed on the same RIR rooster. I have heard that the BO/RIR cross can produce very good laying hens. I have learned a great deal from this site and message board, thanks to all the posters here.

ljs5451: Congrats on your hatches!

I must say that I have a really hard time with calling such cute little chickies & good chickens "mutts," but everyone uses that term, knows what it means, & it gets the point across. I cringe every time I type it. I'll be alright now. The cool things about crosses are that they can be good layers (as any other) & they can often come up with interesting colors. I am not aware of any official names or nicknames for those crossings. Enjoy your chickens & be just as proud as the rest of us, afterall we all have our own reasons for raising these lovely animals.
