FEBRUARY Hatch-A-Long, come join in!!

Day 8 today! I might try and candle them today but I don't know how to really do it properly and I have dark marran and blue ameraucana eggs so hopefully I can see through them?

Day 9 for my first broody EE, and ending day 4 for my clutch of 36(no clue if any are viable/fertile) in the incubator! Down to only 1 roo for the 12 hens now... so I am sure not all will be fertile.

I candled on day 8. I have light brown eggs & they are tough to see through.

The yolk or what ever is in there blocks the light about half way up the egg. The part the chick is in is dark.

Turn the egg slowly & look for shadows moving around. THat is the chick.

Don't cull - I culled yesterday at day 8 & killed 3 of my chicks. I was correct on 7 but wrong on 3. If it were me - go ahead and candle - then write with a sharpie or pencil on the eggs you think may be bad - then come back in a week & do it again. By two weeks there should be little doubt.

Well we are SUPER excited now! We just acquired our eggs for our first hatch. Got an assortment of fertile EE eggs and other crosses (BO, BR, and CM covered by a gorgeous EE roo and a cochin roo) and a handful of sebright eggs!

We are setting them late tomorrow night/early Monday for a Valentine's Day hatch!

I have some welsummer/leghorn, welsummer/cuckoo maran, and welsummer/ araucana crosses due on Feb 6th... can I still play?

Mine are due Feb 12th. Just put them in bator

I just candled tonight , day 8 started at 6pm this evening. As this is my first hatch I am doing exactly what you suggested. Out of the 10 EE eggs I see viens, air sac and some movement definately in 9 of them. One looks off, not much mass and 'maybe' a blood ring. But either way I put them all back in the bator and will check again next Saturday night at day #14. I got lucky that a friend of mine was at the house who has incubated a few times and showed me what to look for ... because it is tricky your first time trying to figure out what you are seeing.

what is that movement from? it isn't swimming or something is it? I thought maybe I was swishing the egg by candling it.

Well, we don't have the silkie eggs for the set this weekend, but we will be setting sunday night around midnight. We are shooting for a Valentine's Day hatch. Our oval participants include: 5 Sebright, 2 EE, and 5 Mystery Eggs (parentage/pedigree unknown).

I'm right there with ya, I have welsummers and ameraucanas in the bator now and on day 8 as well. Tried to candle.......very hard to see whats going on in there with those shell colors.

I'm going to let'em all ride until right before lockdown, will try to candle again then.
