Okay, it isn't even February yet but my babies decided to burst out and celebrate early.

Here's the first Shamo. . .

And out of the egg, there's now two Shamos wandering about.

Here's the first meat bird (shamo x marans) next to a pure Shamo hatching out.

Here's two of my accidental Tolbunt Polish x Marans, which I seem to have a couple of now. One is a beautiful solid chocolate brown color, the other is black with a yellow face. Notice the cute little muffs!

I still have several more Shamos due and a couple more Marans x (hopefully) Shamo chicks due to hatch.

I candled last night so the kids could see. Of the 11 of my own eggs I set, 10 are coming along nicely. They're due on the 11th. I think my turkey eggs are duds, as I suspected, but I'll give them a hair more time and recheck them on Tuesday when I put more eggs in.

Mind if I join in? I set 12 eggs 3 days ago and just candled. I could start to see some veins in 6 them. Im not sure what kind of eggs they are (I think there are some americaunas in there, though) so it will be a surprise. They are due to hatch on the 19th.

Ilia, those babies are gorgeous! Congrats on having them show up a day early! Woohoo!

I have to say that even though it's hard to pick a "favorite" when it comes to the fuzzybutts, I have to comment on the tolbunt polish x marans & their widdle muffs and how I almost fell from my chair, I was so overcome with their cuteness! Hehehe. Please keep posting pics of this interesting cross as these babies mature--I look forward to seeing what they grow into and what kind of eggs they lay.

Again, congrats on the early hatch.

I'll be joining you in just 13 days.

Well I have been getting so many eggs they are piling up in the fridge so decided to leave a batch under my only banty and OEGB. The original "little brown hen". She is steadfast and never changed position when I took her off to mark the eggs and put her back on. If it means that much to her....They are going to be a true barnyard mix. Have a nice gentle big feather legged EE rooster. Mixed flock of hens-not hatching any EE eggs-although I have them. Wanted Cochin or brahma cross-so probably have some of those and maybe buff orpington, australorp. colored eggs are a huge hit to sell. Not sure how long she has been sitting consistently but not more than a day or so. Figuring third week in Feb.

I'm hatching some around February 15th! I gathered up 9 eggs from my SLW and will hopefully be getting some red sex link chicks! So far I have found veins and a black spot in 8/9 eggs! I have a homemade incubator my husband used once to hatch chicks. He only got 1/6 but we think it's due to the humidity. He didn't pay much attention to the humidity and the peeps were pretty much fully developed. I turn my babeis and put new water in everyday!

Depending on what is viable, lock down for 16 OE, 2 Ancona, and 2 EE, is Thursday morning.

With 8, 5 day old serama chicks running around, I need another brooder!

Those are some cute babies, Illia!! I love the little chocolate one. I wonder if he will look like a chocolate Marans when he grows up?

So far I have one baby hatched. It is a silver duckwing phx roo x blue ameraucana hen. It is blue and looks like it will have muffs and beard and pea comb but he is still wet. Legs look to be slate colored. I thought it would hatch out a chipmunky color like the phoenix babies do for some reason lol.

I have one pip and large crack on a pure silver duckwing phx egg. One egg has a pip that is a key west chicken egg. Thats all so far.

Something funny happened earlier tonight. I wish I had a camera with me. My dd who is an older teenager, was outside with me when I was locking up the chickens for the night. She kept messing with this dark blue copper roo named Storm who was out freeranging at the time. I told her, "Don't mess with him he might bite you". She said, "Oh Noooo, He won't, I always do this." I say, "Yeah, but at night, roosters become more defensive and protective".
Which Storm does, especially right before bedtime. So she ignored me and runs towards him stomping her feet. Well he ran right back at her and she goes running off screaming (he loves the drama) and she runs into the truck parked in the yard so he flogs her boot and then chases her about half the wa back up to the house. She is about dying laughing by then and Storm comes back strutting around. She is shocked because he actually chased her. Then she starts calling all her friends telling how the mean rooster chased her lol.
