It really depends on your lighting too, whatever is easier for you to see. Especially if you are turning the eggs by hand.

HI well i have a mess of chicks here.....started hatching Thursday with one nankin then Friday morning an Ameraucana and then overnight a flock of silkies....was going to turn off bator and clean and remove unhatched eggs when i heard some peeping ..I wasnt sure if it was one of the chicks in the brooder and realized it was coming from the eggs well i helped it out and it was a nankin so 4 out of 4 nankins made it to lockdown and hatched...it was tiny but up and about this morning...now to clean out the bator and set a bunch more home silkie eggs some are 2 weeks old so we shall see if they can hatch....total of unhatched eggs was 4 Ameraucanas but they were questionable at last candling 4 silkies...so not bad at all excellent hatch rated on shipped eggs in the frozen north......i got my eggs from Catdance...French Toast and Rockin Paints.....happy hatching....Chris..oh yes i am a hatchaholic and proud of it and definitely a sportsman incubator fan it is a great machine for maintaining temps and humidity even when you have to scoop out a gaggle of chicks

Yeah! Can't wait to see how well yours do. I've heard they often need help hatching. Were yours shipped? I've also heard shipping is particularly hard on Serama eggs.

Here's hoping we both have excellent, easy hatches!

Thanks,
Yes, mine were shipped. The lady I got them from only lives two hours away from me so they only took one day to get to me. She sent them Wednesday morning, and I got them Thursday morning.

I think if they would have been shipped from farther away my hatch rates wouldn't be as good.

for the both of us!

You do know they only "Take" 18 days...right? Most people say longer, but I just set my Brinsea for 18 days.

I have heard they can only take 18 days. Do you have anything but the Serama in there? I plan on locking down a day early to accommodate. It shouldn't hurt the others, should it??

It'll be interesting to see how quickly yours pop. Are you using a still air or forced? I have a still air Hovabator.

Hey I am sorry more eggs didn't hatch. So you only had 1 out of 5 ameraucanas hatch? I was sure you would get more as we had the same eggs around the same exact day as well from Rockinpaints...I ended up with 6 out of 8 hatch..(and no twins! lol) Mine also came through a terrible snow/ice storm and sat at the PO for the week...

Wild party in the incubator last night! No eggs have pipped yet, but goodness! When I went to bed they were all still in their neat little rows, when I woke up and looked in they are up against other eggs, spun around, no where near neat tlittle lines!

I am viewing this as more of a ggreat sign that they are all still doing spledidly!

We're attempting our first hatch, using Trader Joe's eggs in a DIY incubator. Temps have been up and down, humidity as well. Day 21 begins this evening at 6 pm. I have seen references to eggs rocking/moving going into lockdown. I've seen no such movement in mine, but on day 18 candled, and saw chicks moving and the egg cavity basically filled, with decent looking air cells. Is there always supposed to be movement in the eggs, or just some eggs? I started with 24 eggs, locked down 15 that were still viable.
