That first chick didn't make it. It never completely got out of the shell and stopped breathing. The other 4 eggs haven't even cracked open the shell, so if they don't do it within the next couple of hours, I guess I will have to throw them out. Today is day 23.

You could candle them and see if you see movement or if they internally pipped. Or you could do the float test. If they float and bob around, something is still alive. If they sink or don't move, they are dead.

Yes my hen is blue and the rooster is splash so the theoretical yield is 50/50 of each color. Still I was surprised to actually get half of each color! I will be selling the blues and keeping the splashes.

Do you prefer splash? I would keep the blue if they were mine ha! It's my first hatch so I will be hard pressed not to keep them all.

Well, I already have blues and wheatens. I would like to have a splash pullet, and a new splash cockerel to replace the one I have (hopefully with better coloring) because I would like to work on breeding blue wheaten but need a good splash male to start that project :)

ETA I have two blues but I only hatched the eggs from one because she lays a darker egg and is better looking over all.

Pip, Patsy, and Annie!
The largest egg, Hazel, didn't make it. She internally pipped at the same time as Annie. They were both rocking and peeping, then Pip, who was my first hatched, ran over both eggs and rolled Hazel around like she was playing soccer. I don't know if it confused the one trying to hatch, or what, but she never pipped. After 3 days I checked and she had died in the egg. An eggtopsy showed what looked like a big, healthy baby. The yolk and veins had been absorbed. I know it happens, but it still made me sad.

Cool, so you have some of every color. I can never tell who laid what egg unless I'm standing there.

Well, my wheatens are a couple months older and started laying first, so I know which are theirs, though I don't know which pullet lays which eggs. So the two chocolate eggs that came later obviously belonged to my blues, though I didn't know who was laying which until I put dye in the vent of the one I suspected was laying the lighter color (and I guessed right - two days later she laid an egg with blue specks).

We lost power last night for several hours the eggs were cold when we came home and found them. I put my Dominique egg in my bra while I made a hot water bag to put the eggs under to try to warm the back up. They went back in the incubator once the power went on but by that time the house was in the high 50's. I candled this morning and could see movement in 5 of the 10 eggs. Today is day 18, what are the chances the other's will hatch?
