How Eggciting!

I set 12 eggs from my 3 swedish flower hens on 2/11. I had collected 9 eggs over 4 days, then I realized that one of the hens had spent the previous couple days in the nesting box. I had planned to collect for another day or two, but at that point I realized that the broody hen wouldn't be laying any more, so I decided to set my eggs. To make an even dozen, I took 3 eggs that had been in the fridge for 5 days. (I know, people say you can't do that, but I've heard anectdotal reports of perople who have, and I've also heard of broody hens hatching eggs that have spent time in a cold nest. It wouldn't hurt to try.)

I candled last night, which was day 7.
All 3 of the eggs that were in the fridge look good. ;)
6 of the other eggs look good.
2 appear clear
1 appears to be a quitter.

So far so good!
That hen that I thought might be broody, is back out of the nest, but I don't think she;s layed any eggs in the past 8 days. I was hoping to let her raise the chicks, because in some ways it's so much easier, but it doesn't look like that will be happening.

Out of 28 eggs that made it to lockdown it is now day 24 and we have 4 chicks and there is still slight hope for another 3 or so meaning they still have live babies in them all my eggs were shrink wrapped so i will be adjusting my humidity for the 5 eggs going into lockdown on thurs I may have a slight problem my egg addiction has out grown my number of incubators I have a 4th incubator coming around the 1st of march but inthe mean time I have one bator I am still using as a hatcher and that is where the 5 lockdown eggs will go and one full incubator and my third incubator that holds 42 eggs can only hold an additional 27 eggs to the 15 that are already in there and I have two shipments of eggs arriving in the next few days. The shipments are going to be a group of 27 and about another group of 12 lol I think I have a problem. So now I am wondering if the incubator will hold more eggs with out the turner? I know I can fit some additional eggs along the side of the turner and then just turn those by hand I guess we will have to wait and see what happens I went through and culled out 8 eggs that were clear or had blood rings, everything else that was far enough along to see what was going on was viable.

Hope the rest of this batch make it. Congrats on the 4 that already hatched and hope you have a great hatch on the other ones still incubating..

The incubators always hold quite a few more eggs without the turner, just need to turn them by hand.

And I do believe you are addicted.

out of 26 eggs that made it to lock-down 6 are already hatched 5 yesterday on day 19, 1 already this morning and another pip. of thos eggs 4 polish hatched and 1 polish is pipping. 2 of my Araucana cross hatched. But none of the 7 eggs I bought have piped or hatched yet. Still waiting as today is day 20.

I also have an incubator for a hatcher when I need it and I am using it now, as I also have more eggs in my other incubator.

Here are some pictures I took, they are not very good as this particular incubator/Hatcher is too bright and the flash makes it harder to take pictures. I will of course in a couple days when the chicks are in my cage brooder I will take more pictures.

Well, lockdown started last night. If all goes well I should have 3 fluffy butts by Friday night. I'm a little concerned about their air sacs. They seem much too small for the 18th day but the humidity hasn't been too high, roughly 45 throughout the entire incubation. Hopefully they all make it.....

Day 14 here 27 eggs remain .... Candled and traced the air cells...All look great, babies filling the shell like they should, Decided to finish this hatch using the dry hatch method...Humidity now at 36-38%, temps holding at 101.1-102.4.... Going to have to keep a close eye on it, at this stage babies can generate their own heat which may play havoc with the incubator temps.... Looking forward to a bunch of fuzzy butts next week!
