Feed Waste

I made one of the 5 gallon bucket with elbows feeders and have been using it for my six gals since June. However, I am still getting many pounds of wasted feed somehow thrown into the bedding from the feeder.

I am feeding a layer mash.

Would I have less waste thrown if I switched to a pellet feed, or do I need to extend the 3" PVC neck holes longer than the 1" currently?

Thinking of not filling the feeder and making them forage through the wood chips to clean up the waste! :)

I have my girls on starter crumbles right now because I have 17 week old pullets in with the big girls. Such a mess and waste. They always clean up the spilled pellets but not the crumble. I found that I spend less on feed and have less of a mess to clean up with the pellets. Even when I leave the feeder empty they won't clean up the crumble. I don't know, maybe they don't like it as much or can't see it as good or something. I can't wait to go back to pellets.
